For the eighth time Art Jackson stood off tough com petition to win (the Club Championship at McHenry Country Club last Sunday. Not shooting the best golf of his enviable career, Art had the class to turn in a 292 score for the 72 hole match, only 8 strokes over par for the distance. It was Tim Martin who came on with a burst of great golf to shoot at 34-36-70 on Sunday to add thrill after ^thrill in an uphill fight. \ Gary Adams turned in a nifty 72 for the day, but was too far off the pace going into the final round Jackson was out with a 39 on the first nine, then came in with a 36 to hold his margin of vic tory The weatherman sent down drops of rain throughout the afternoon, but not enought to stop play. When the match was Hutch's Harriers Ready For Opener over and in the record books, the sun shone brightly. McHenry has some sharp golfers who are sure to be heard from in future years. STAFF PHOTO-W AYNE GAYLORD Old Bridge Sweeps To Capture Championship IS IT GONNA BREAK? appears to be the question on the face of Gary Adams in Sunday's final round. It broke, but not enough. Gary settled for par during his round of 72 that enabled him to mov e into the fourth spot with a 72 hole total of 305. Bridge Record 2K-0 The Old Bridge captured the 1978 Twelve Inch Cham pionship by defeating King's Row 16-5. The win climaxed a 3- game sweep in the finals over King's Row. and an undefeated season in overall league play The Bridge swept 21 straight regular season games and also knocked off the All-Stars in a doubleheader They rolled over St. Regis by identical 12-2 scores in the semi-finals and then proceeded to win 3 straight in the finals over King's Row Although the score was not quite as lopsided as their 23-0 victory in game two, the Bridge still managed to win easily in the final game Eight runs in the first two innings on 11 hits sealed the Row's fate King's Row. who put together an excellent first game exhibition versus Old Bridge, never came close in game three as they combined for only 5 hits One of those hits was a 2 run homer by Ken Mitchell in the seventh It should have been a routine flyout but the ball sailed over Hon Miller's head in left for an easy roundtripper Miller exclaimed after the ball game, "I'm an All Star in any league but not at every position'" Tom l.es I .••ads Winners Tom Les led the winners with a perfect 4 for 4 The Bridge centerfielder also drove in 4 runs and scored one run Les combined 7 runs and 11 RBI's in the 5 playoff games to lead all players in the Huns Produced category Rightfielder Joe Dehn also drove in 4 runs Dehn. who led the league with 50 RBI's. led both teams with 10 RBI's in the 3 game series Dehn also produced the most runs • 151 in the championship series Leadoff batter Doug Freund scored 3 runs giving him a total of 10 for the series and 14 in the T> playoff games which was tops for all players Rick Wakitsch, Bridge first baseman, also scored 3 runs and hit safely 3 times That gave Wakitsch 7 hits in the playoff finals tying him with Ron Miller for tops in that department King's How Enjoys Successful Season For King's Row the loss was anti-climactic after a truly remarkable season the Row finished in a third place tie with St Regis in their first year of McHenry 12-Inch Picked not to make the playoffs at season's start. Chuck Marke led the march as the Row knocked off their first four opponents Although they dropped a doubleheader to Old Bridge they continued to split at least every doubleheader through the middle of the season An end of the vear let down almost cost them the playoff berth And when they made the playoffs they were not picked to win in the semi-finals 1 Jimmy the Greek gave them 75-1 odd- si However they swept two straight semi-final games over Raymond's Johnsburg Bowl Both games saw King's Row come up with a consistent hitting attack which included a 9-run inning in game two to overcome a Bowl lead The Row made it into the finals and faced their biggest challenge, the undefeated Old Bridge The first game was nip- and tuck as the Row dropped a 13-9 decision A few errors hurt but they showed they could hit along with the Bridge Disaster struck in game two as pitching, fielding, and throwing errors added to a powerful Old Bridge offense equalled a 23-0 slaughter King s Row had only 4 hits in the contest and the "writing was on the wall' ' In game three the Old Bridge continued where they left off in the previous game Eleven Bridge batters hit safely while King's Row added 7 errors The Row had only 5 hits, one better than in game two, and never really challenged the winners Sidelights Bob Mauch went hitless in his only time at bat to fall below 1 (HK) for the 1978 season Mauch however picked up the "save' ' when he came on in relief of Greg Freund in the seveth Mauch walked two while serving a homerun pitch to Mitchell King's How abrhrbi Walkington.
