STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Stevenson Defeats Warriors In Opening Game Of Season 36 To 6 By Dick Rabbitt With a fast charging line and full-back Chip Gatto, the Stevenson High Patriots defeated the Warriors in the opening game of the season 36 to 6 The game was played before a large crowd, including the parents of the Warrior varsity players and cheerleaders The 510" senior 205 lb fullback scored all five touch downs for the visitors, as they ran at will against the inex perienced Warrior line. After the Patriots took the opening kickoff deep in their territory, Gatto romped 47 yds on the second play of the game Moments later he plunged over from the 2 and the Warriors were down 6 to 0 at 10:01 Mike Springer's kick was good and the Warriors trailed 7 to 0 After the kickoff and an exchange of downs the Patriots started again from their own 43 Mark Schmitke another one of the Patriots returning backs carried the mail in four tries to the Warrior 14 Then on a burst over the middle Gatto scored again, and his jaunt into the end zone made it Patriots 15 Warriors 0 at the 4 00 mark of the initial period That was the way the game ended at the end of the first period In the second period the Warriors began a drive, and early in the period fullback Mark Vogt of the Warriors broke loose and ran 45 yds to the Patriots 15 On 4th down Pete Prust s pass to Tim Frantz was ruled incomplete as Frantz stepped out of the end zone Later in the period the Patriots started another drive from the Warrior 40, and Gatto again went into paydirt from 4 yds to make it 21 to 0 Springer again kicked the PAT and it was 22 to 0 at the in termission Halftime proceedings took place introducing the parents of the players and cheerleaders The Warriors received in the second half and after Wilson brought the ball to the Warrior 18, the Patriots held and the Warriors were forced to punt Quarterback Dave Keller of the Patriots passed to Tony Scaletto good for 46 yards to the Warrior 16 Three plays later Gatto scored his fourth T D of the game from the 2. and Springer's PAT was good for a 29 to 0 score for the Patriots Dave Theel brought the kickoff back to the Warrior 30 Prust's pass to Nowell was good for 49 yds to the Patriot 21. After a one yard gain, Prust found Tim Zeller alone in the end zone for the first Warrior score The PAT was no good and the Warrior trailed 29 to 6 After the kickoff and ex change of punts the Patriots again went on the march, with Gatto finally scoring from the 8 for his fifth T D. of the game Springer's kick again was good and the Warriors trailed 36 to 6 going into the final period The last period saw Stevenson's reserves manage to keep the Warriors from scoring, although the Warriors were on the march until an intercepeted pass stopped them from getting into paydirt The Warriors were simply beaten by a better ball club The Patriot line was quick, Gatto and Schmitke, along with Dan Triplett were hard run ners, and it took more than one Warrior to stop th'>m on the ground The Patriots only passed twice and likewise only punted two tinries throughout the evening. The Warrior line needs im provement They were beaten to the punch numerous times However, we must pouit out a few good spots Mike Mroz had an excellent half against the Patriots Eddie Walker was all over the field and was in numerous tackles, and Jim Althoff did his part from the offensive center positon in his first varsity game Stevenson 15 7 14 0 36 Mcllenr> 0 0 6 0 6 Scoring Stevenson Touchdowns, Gatto 5 McHenry. Florida Hope somebody has a good camera and will send us a black and white picture of the happy group Manager Herman Franks of the Cubs put on quite a show when he kicked dirt all over an umpire s shoes and pant legs Some wondered why the ump did nothing about it They didn t know that Herman had been given the old heave-ho before the kicking act started Franks can kick dust .but not with the finesse formerly shown by Leo "Lippy' Durocher One time Leo kicked dirt on umpire Jocko Conlon's shoes and "accidentally' kicked him in the shin Conlon was wearing shin guards so only his feelings were hurt Jocko, a likeable, but tough Irishman, took good aim and kicked Leo s shin bone real good What the Lippy one learned was never trade kicks with a fellow wearing metal toe plates on his shoes , Something ought to be done about manufacturers who make shirts without pockets Tom and Pat Burke sailed forth in a green golf cart to match their outfits the final day of the Club Championship play at McHenry County Club and I didn't make it in time to see the ensemble One of life s little disap pointments Jim Freund Longhorn proprietor and born Cub fan, was out to greet the crowd one Friday night when his team had won a double header After his team had dropped down a few notches by the next Friday night. Jim stayed in the kitchen to work off his disap pointment Only a miracle can bring Jim and some other Cub fans we know quite well out of the bushes again this season "What about your White Sox"", say our tormentors We have fleet outfielders who can go get em. but fail to call off the other eager beavers We also have some relief pitchers who must go away What do we have" Hopes for next year That's what we have Watched the Bears win a 16- 13 squeaker from the San Francisco footballers in a game where our hopes had gone dead From our observation, Harper is going to have to be handed the ball more times Other teams will key in on Payton The trusty toe of kicker Thomas kept the Bears within range On defense, Doug Buffone showed us how an old Jack and Bev Just en. Packer fans all the way, must be singing "The Pack is Back" after their second win of the early season Apparently Green Bay has a passing attack this year Give Bart Starr the players and he will show them how it is done If I had to win one big game in the days when Bart was in his prime, he would be my quarterback Cool, clean and clever was Bart Starr Our Warrior football team was outclassed by a rampaging Stevenson High eleven here last Friday night Stevenson had backs that ran like a big black bear was chasing them. And they had a line that worked with precision After the final gun, I couldn't recall a single injury in the entire game It is Sunday night and I have watched baseball, football and tennis until my eyes are tired and sports events are coming out of my ears Marian Tennis Team Defeats MCHS Girls Marian Central girls tennis team defeated the McHenry girls tennis team last week by the score of 3 to 2 Only in the singles with Sue Hutchinson and Carol Latz winning put the Warriors on the scoreboard The frosh-soph won 3 to 2 to give them a record of 2 and 0, jvhile the varsity is one and one on the season VARSITY Singles No I Sue Hutchinson vs Sue Alblinger, McH 6-0, 6-4 No 2 Mary Beth Adams vs Heather Newkirk, Mar . 6-1, 6 1 No 3: Carol I^atz vs Karen Truckenbrod.
