THIS WEDGE SHOT~was perfect for Bob Dobecki as he pitches near the pin on the 17th green of Chapel Hill Golf club during the final round of play in the Championship Flight. His one putt was good for a par 5 on the 585-yard hole. Dobecki's wedge failed him on the par 3, 18th hole where he carded a 5. It cost him the club titie by a stroke as he finished second with a 36-hole total of 152. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Johnsburg Skyhawks Lead 12-7 At Halftime, Lose To Grayslake 20-12 By Scott Dixon The sun shined for a while Saturday as the Johnsburg High School varsity football squad made its debut at Grayslake But although the Johnsburg Skyhawks showed some polish during the first half, owning a 12-7 halftime lead, a Grayslake aerial attack beginning late in the third quarter spoiled Johnsburg's plans for a first-game victory. The Hams scored on two touch down passes and closed the contest with a 20-12 win Skyhawk coach Mike Heimerdinger was generally pleased with his squad's per formance. especially team defense "We played team defense well." the coach said "Wayne Moran and Mark Arvidson were among those who did a real good job on defense " Heimerdinger admitted that the defensive backs need some work Grayslake's passing game was far too successful The Johnsburg coach also expressed some satisfaction with the way his team initiated the offense "It 's a new offense, and the kids are doing real well in running it." he said "But today just when we had things going, we would fumble We had flashes that we're coming around, and I feel that we are farther along than most people thought we'd be " Johnsburg's first touchdown came with 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter Skyhawk quarterback Mike Behan set up the touchdown with a screen pass to wide receiver Rick Szumlas, who carried the ball 29 yards to the Ham 4-yard line Three plays later Marian Central High School transfer student Bill Hovseth carried the ball two yards on a sweep to score the game's first touchdown Johnsburg's attempt for a two-point conversion failed Grayslake controlled the football through most of the second quarter The Rams' senior halfback Jeff McCrory carried the football for three consecutive first downs to the Johnsburg 6-yard line Teammate Tom Farm, senior halfback, went in to score with 1 25 remaining in the half. Guy Winters' kick made it 7-6 in favor of Grayslake The first play following Grayslake's kickoff, Johnsburg bounced back into the scoring column Senior quarterback Behan completed a 26-yard pass to senior Rich Backs who raced 40 yards for the score Johnsburg's second attempt for a two-point conversion also failed. Johnsburg led 12-7 at the halftime gun Early in the third quarter senior linebacker Mike Ahlert intercepted a Grayslake missle and carried the ball to the Skyhawk 35-yard line Behan then took to the air, hitting Hich Backs for a 18-yard gain The Skyhawks picked up 10 more yards with a Behan pass to 240-pound senior Don Bentz Two plays later another pass to" Bentz advance the ball 12 more vards McHenry Hec.reation I .a diet Tuesday Night Bottling l.eagut*. 7 p.m. «»-l2-7K Averages or better Dottie Hayes, 185 511. C. -- One of the great championship teams of the sixties was base ball's Detroit Tigers of 1968. The Tigers that year came from behind, 1-3, in the World Series and took it away from the St. Louis Cardinals. There's no denying this was one of the great come backs of recent years. It help ed unify, again, the people of Detroit, so torn with dissention and confusion in the preceding year. Tiger hitting coach Gates Brown (Gator) was a member of that team, a .462 pinch hitter. Few have done better in that role, nor have many been Freshman Skyhawks Bring First Pigskin Win To Johnsburg PAGE 7 - PLAIN!if . i t vm i»\ SEPTEMBER Old Bridge Sweeps Johnsburg; One Game Away From Title The freshman football squad brought Johnsburg High School its first pigskin victory Friday afternoon at Grayslake as the Skyhawks blasted the Rams 18- 6. Both of Johnsburg's touch downs were scored in the second quarter. Halfback Terry Boyer scored on a 16-yard run early in the quarter, and Pat Rorig scampered across the goal line for a 2-point con version. The second touchdown came with three minutes r^nainirg in the half on a pass and run from quarterback Dan Williams to split and Rob Sch midt. The extra points came on a pass from Williams to tight end Pete Barroso Williams was seven for seven in passing. The Skyhawks scored a 2 point safety in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 18- 0 With 1:30 remaining in the game, the Grayslake quar terback ran 83 yards on a busted play against Johnsburg second defense to put six points into the Grayslake scoring column Johnsburg freshman coach Bob Schmitt was happy with this team's defense, and par ticularly with the performance of the linebackers "Our defense, led by linebackers PatRorig and Paul Smith, held Grayslake to about 80 yards in running and passing for three quarters," Schmitt said Friday, the freshmen travel to Crown for the Skyhawks' second game of the season, Randy Swikle Varsity Warriors Win Two Of Three Meets On the next play disaster struck as the Rams recovered a Johnsburg fumble and brought the ball 16 yards to the Rams 39 yard line. It was a turning point of the game Two plays later Grayslake quarterback Terry Parola delivered a 50- yard touchdown pass to let- terman Jeff Pekelsma. The extra point was good with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter The Skyhawk s secondary was to be tested again midway through the fourth quarter Quarterback Pat Micucci. who relieved Grayslake' Parola, dropped back and hurled a 30- yard pass to Winters, who was wide open in the end zone. Grayslake now led 20-12 as the extra point attempt failed Johnsburg's final chance to tie the game came with a minute remaining when Rick Szumlas gained a first down with a reverse play to the Skyhawk 40-yard line John sburg could not advance the ball and the Hams took possession moments before the game ended Behan completed 10 of 16 passes for 154 yards with one touchdown pass and one in terception This Saturday Johnsburg play Hononegah High school at McCracken Field in McHenry The sophomore game begins at 12 noon, and the varsity is scheduled for 2 p m Heimerdinger reports that Hononegah is a quick team with lots of depth and is a conference contender along with Harvard, who Johnsburg will play Oct 7 for Homecoming The McHenry High School cross country team won two of three meets this past week, defeating Grayslake and Zion, while losing to Antioch On the frosh-soph level the young Warriors won all three meets for another outstanding per formance FROSH-SOPH Thursday 9-14-78 At Antioch Won - McHenry 18 - Zion 43. On August 27th the Tigers ^'reunioned" in Detroit before the Milwaukee game; Denny McLain, Mickey Lolich (who really won it for the Tigers, more than anyone else, with three of the team's victories, including the finale), A1 Kaline and many others were there. The best story was Gator's. In a crucial 1968 game, he was sneak-eating two hot dogs when suddenly Mayo Smith called for him to pinch-hit. He cleverly slid them in his shirt, half-hoping to strike out. He hit a double. When he had to slide into second, the mustard, meat and ketchup all slid with him, to the general astonish ment, and fun, of all involved. That was the spirit which help ed win it for Detroit in 1%8 -as it often does. • Terri Bohlman * Colleen Byrne halfback * Jill halfback Wohnrade sweeper center right * Sharon Smith - right wing * Sue Haddick - right inner » Chris Connell - left inner * Wendy Aissen - halfback Sue Bielsky - fullback Lon Bohlman - fullback Sue Smith - left wing Carrie Miller - fullback Julie Powell - halfback Coach Sis Morner Mgr Shern Scarbrough , denotes letterman The Old Bridge Softball club swept Johnsburg tavern in a doubleheader Thursday night to move within one win of the championship in the Men's 16 inch league Old Bridge leads the best of five series 2 games to none, with a chance to win the title Tuesday night.
