Johnsburg Student Receives State School Board Award The State Board of Education's fifth annual "Those Who Excel" program honored 190 individuals for their contributions to the K-12 education system in Illinois at a banquet held in Springfield. The banquet honored classroom teachers, school administrators, students, school board members, parents, and community members for their con­ tributions to both the public and nonpublic elementary and secondary school systems. Hanner, former McHenry resident, and rector emeritus of Holy Comforter Episcopal church, Kenilworth). Our 1978 vacation was a trip to Oregon We wanted to s.*e Mike and Susie and friends along our way. The first stop was Denver. This year instead of driving we flew. Our plane took off very early in the morning so it was determined to go to the Tampa airport the night before and stay at the hotel, thus weeding out any troubles getting to the airport early the next morning (shortly after 7 a.m.). We are over thirty miles from the runways. There is a rather nice little bus that takes us to the Tampa airport. We went in one of those Florida downpours I have described for you; but everything went well and 9 a.m., Sept. 1, found us descending through the overcast to the mile high Denver runways. There in the midst of finding our luggage we found B<shop and Mrs. Thayer awaiting us -she seeking us--he mired in traffic. The airport which is one of the worst in the U.S. (others being, O'Hare, Atlanta and Kennedy) has mile long corridors down which you trudge laden with paraphenalia you would have left at home if you'd used the sense God gave you. We were all delighted to see each other--we had been in school together, been in each other's wedding parties and toured Mexico and the British Isles in company. There was good fun, lots of ribbing and Mrs. Thayer's high grade cooking to inspire and sustain us We did art galleries, museums, saw my godson now nearingforty (heavenly days), and picked more nasturtiums than I knew existed, (Did you know Ike Eisenhower always put a nasturtium leaf in his vegetable soup?) for my clerical freind is an ardent gardener. He also roots for the Denver Broncos, a strange aberration that is observable in citizens of the Centennial State. In the afternoon we walked in the Mamie Eisenhower Park There I could "lift up mine eyes unto the hills" for the Rockies ran all along the western horizon. We had seen Pikes Peak as our plane prepared to land. We have been up Pikes Peak three times, in youth and twice later. We never get enought of U.S. travel. Our own land is so rich and still beautiful in spite of smog and freeways and hordes of cheap cars that cost too much. When your "ticker" is faulty you have to take Denver slowly at first One of the things we find lots of fun doing in Florida is at­ tending dinner theater.
