FINDS A HOLE-Warrior running back Mark Vogt finds enough room for a McHenry first down during the first quarter of Saturday's McHenry-Crystal Lake game at Crystal Lake. Vogt was limited in the game to 47 yards on 14 carries by the strong Crystal Lake defense, which shut out the Warriors 49-0. It was the first place Tigers homecoming game. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Johnsburg Skyhawks Beat Valley- Lutheran 30-20 For First Win By Scott Dixon A brilliant performance by halfback Bill Hovseth paced the Johnsburg Skyhawks to their first victory Saturday. Hov seth. a junior, scored three touchdowns to lead Johnsburg over Valley Lutheran 30 to 20. A tough Skyhawk defense forced Valley Lutheran to punt midway through the first quarter After a series of runs, Johnsburg quarterback Handy Wakitsh unleashed a 51 yard pass to junior Hick Szumlas, who was tackled at the Valley Lutheran 9 yard line On the next play Hovseth put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard with a 9 yard run right up the middle Wakitsh s 2-point conversion pass to Don Bentz made it 8 to 0 with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter Valley Lutheran's possession of the football did not last for long A wall composed of big John Olsson, Gary Parsons, and Wayne Moran stopped Valley Lutheran's first down attempt. Once again the Skyhawks had the ball, and offense was moving. Wakitsch completed a 47 yard pass to Bentz, and on a succeeding Hovseth made a second trip into the end zone - this time from 25 yards The extra point attempt failed, and the Skyhawk lead was 14-0 with 9:28 remaining in the half. A Johnsburg fumble set up Valley Lutheran for the team's first score Lutheran's Brian Shultz brought the ball in from the 5 yard line. The extra point kick failed The last five minutes of the first half were marred by a series of errors on the part of both teams. In that short time, a total of four fumbles and three pass interceptions oc curred. Skyhawk 6'2" junior Chris Dixon intercepted two Lutheran passes. Lutheran also had one fumble. Johnsburg lost the ball three times on fumbles and one time on pass in terceptions. More Johnsburg fumbles in the third quarter led to another Valley Lutheran Score. Kyle Davis threw a 20 yard touch down pass to Shultz and the extra point kick was good. The Johnsburg lead had dwindled to 14 to 12 with 5:52 left in the third quarter A touchdown pass to Rich Backs from senior quarterback John Flood was cancelled because of a holding penalty. After Skyhawk Rick Szumlas pulled down two interceptions and recovered a fumble, Hovseth scored again on a 36 yard touchdown run with 4:49 remaining in the game. Hov- seth's two point run put Johnsburg ahead 22 to 12. Wakitsh took to the air again, hitting Bentz with a 20 yard touchdown pass. Another pass to Bentz added two points for the conversion, and the Skyhawks commanded a comfortable 3 to 12 lead with 2:17 left in the game. Valley Lutheran didn't give up, however, and scored again with 25 seconds remaining The two point conversion was successful, and the game ended with a Johnsburg margin of 30 to 20. Skyhawk Mike Ahlert ran 103 yards during the game. Johnsburg returns to con ference action Saturday against Beloit Catholic at McCracken Field. She will be accompanied by her tennis coach, Connie Sanders. Three of Johnsburg's four entrants reached the quarterfinals during the District tournament. "Considering this is our first year, I think we did quite well,!' said Coach Sanders. The very talented Lisa Jackson qualified for the quarterfinals and was then defeated by her good friend from McHenry, junior Sue Hutchinson. The McHenry girl, who was seeded number one, went on to win the District singles. n "Lisa really has a love of the game," praised Coach Sanders. "I've never seen a senior who has put more time into improving her tennis performance." Jackson is a smooth player with a real strong serve. She literally glides across the court and positions herself so that she is well prepared for every stroke. The Szumlas sisters, Karen and Kathy, also advanced to the quarterfinals. Karen, a senior, and Kathy, a freshman, put forth an excellent performance. Despite their determined efforts, they were defeated by the number one doubles team in the District competition. „ Johnsburg's other doubles team, Darlene Mann and Karen Grenman, had to face the number one seeded team in the first round and was eliminated right away. For Grenman, it was her first year of tennis, according to Coach Sanders. She was the third doubles partner for Mann this season. Mann's first partner was Shelia Warner, a foreign exchange student from Rhodesia. Warner showed much potential until she broke her ankle while horseback riding In District competition, each school may send two singles and two doubles entrants. Twenty girls participated in singles and 20 teams were entered for doubles in the Round Lake District. The top four entrants in singles and doubles qualify for State. The State finals begin at 1 p.m. Thursday. Stanell does not yet know who her opponent will be. "Kristi's biggest strength is her concentration," says her coach. "She can keep rallying back and has good placement where her shots go. She doesn't get too shook up by things; she remains pretty calm. Mentally, I think Kristi will be well prepared." PA(iF 7 - lM.MNDK M.FK - WKDNKSDAY, OCTOBER 25,197* < • Sanders has been working with Stanell in an attempt to help the jn-Jit 'ov^lop a more agressive serve. "She does Well in practice, but in a game situation she tends to be a bit over-cautious. Her serve is too soft." -'4- Stanell will apparently have to participate in the State "* competition without an official Johnsburg tennis uniform. It's the > end of the season, and the girls' uniforms have still not arrived. It's * * ironic that the uniforms for boys tennis, which begins in the I spring, are in but the girls'uniforms are not. « There were 10 girls on the varsity tennis team and 12 on the;-; junior varsity squad. "I have some real good freshmen coming up," says Sanders AngieCuira, Vicki Knake, and Kathy Szumlas have all shown a lot*" of potential. Sue Pfendert, who will be a senior next year, can also help the team. But things are still pretty well open regarding next year. The ones who work the hardest during the off-season will be the ones who will step up into the big positions." Sanders says she hopes some home tennis courts are available^ for use by next season. She would also like to see a tennis program- developed at the junior high level. OUT OF THE INK WELL... Johnsburg basketball fans who ; caught televised highlights of the Chicago Bulls-San Diego,. "I got to talk with several of the players after the game," Although it was the first time Dixon worked for the Bulk, it was the second time he has visited the Bulls locker room. Cross country runner Jim Smith won a medal placing 18th in the Mundelein Invitational Saturday.
