Reservations are being ac cepted for the Defensive Driving course to be presented Nov. 1 and ^o. 8 at the McHenry County Farm Bureau building by the Farm Bureau Women's committee. The course is open to all licensed drivers, and Mrs. Ella Martin, committee chairman, emphasized that the public is invited to participate in this refresher-updating type program The Defensive Driving program will run from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on the two evenings in November. John Scott of the Country Companies, will be the instructor. Scott, trained with a National Safety council program, says a combination of techniques are used to help people become better drivers, such as movies, demon strations. discussions, and workbooks - The cost is for the workbook which is used both evenings of the course and which provides a permanent record of key defensive driving techniques. Defensive driving is valuable even for the most experienced, veteran drivers Schools send their bus drivers to the course, for example, says Mrs. Martin. Taking the course will help one answer such questions as the following: 1 How many auto accidents are preventable? ANSWER: Nine out of ten Furthermore, eight out of ten are preventable by the person not legally responsible for the accident, says the National Safety council A preventable accident is one where you failed to do everything you reasonably could to prevent it 2. This applies to regular roadways, not tollways. One- third of all two-car crashes occur during a passing situation. The Defensive Driver program is a good way to get up-to-date on signs, laws, courtesy, and rules of the road. In the eight-hour course, the student will learn how to keep out of tight situations, how to react in critical situations. Topics will include driving on expressways, driving on wet or grease-slick roads, driving on blacktops, backing up, pedestrian rights and the Turn- Right-on Red law. j Offer Free Diabetes Tests Free diabetes tests will be administered at McHenry hospital during National Diabetes week (Nov. 6-11) to all interested persons 15 years of age and older, according to Anthony Corcoran, executive director of the hospital. The annual screening is a service of the hospital's Outreach corhmittee and the Northern Illinois affiliate of the A m e r i c a n D i a b e t e s association. It is designed to identify previously un diagnosed cases of diabetes. (Of the estimated 400,000 diabetics in northern Illinois, about 60 percent are un diagnosed.) "This simple blood-sugar test requires that a specific break fast, lunch or dinner be eaten two hours beforehand. Therefore, we will make ap pointments for persons who wish to be tested, and we will send instructions for the pre test meal." Among the instructions are a list of "do's and don't's" for the person to be tested. "We are especially interested in reaching persons who may fear they have diabetes because of abnormal thirst, rapid weight loss, frequent urination, extreme hunger, drowsiness, general weakness, visual disturbances, and skin infections," Corcoran said Testings will be done Nov. 6- 11 as follows: On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10-11:30 a.m. and 2-3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 7-8 p.m. and on Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon. Results will be mailed to the person tested; therefore, everyone is requested to bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope, business size. Only green peppers, tomatoes and green onions do not require blanching There is no danger of food poisoning in freezing, it doesn't heat up your kitchen and freez ing is surely easier than can ning So. if you have the freez er space you really ought to try freezing fresh produce. Vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower should be soaked in salt water about 30 minutes to kill any hidden bugs Use 4 teaspoons of salt to a gallon of water Blanching time varies for dif ferent vegetables, so do check a chart Use about a gallon of water, rapidly boiling, for every pound of vegetables Place vegetables in a colander, using a rather small amount of vegetables at a time Then im merse in icy water to stop the cooking Be sure to use bags or.boxes that are recommended for freezing and it has proven to be better for freezing if you use both Put your vegetables in a freezer bag and then put the hag in a waxed freezer box Be su'e, too, that your vegetables have cooled before packaging.
