L. "Buck ' Rogers Good fishing guides should he placed on the "endangered species list." There are a few of them still around, but I'm afraid that the breed is following in the footsteps of the American buffalo and the Nigenan odorless skunk And, you know what? This de- filorable situation is mostly our ault. Remember the trusty Cree In dian guide who used to tote a freighter canoe across a portage with ease? Well, they're getting scarce these days. Most of the younger generation of guides now wear black leather jackets and plat form boots and are more proficient at shooting pool and drinking beer than making portages or paddling a canoe. Few still carry on the time- honored profession of suidinp As a result, the price of fishing in Canada has gone up, and the quality of this wilderness experi ence is way down. The situation with bass fishing guides is perhaps worse. This new breed of outdoorsmen now expects you to pay them a hundred bucks per day for the privilege of watching them catch more fish than you do. This situation results from the misplaced concept that catching lots of fish is the name of the game and because most of their clients don't know how to catch 'em. Yes, it's our fault. We've spoiled our bass fishing guides worse than we have the Cree professionals up north. In Norway and Ireland, where angling is a gentleman's game, this is not the case. The fishing guide here is still a true professional and usually a pleasant fishing com panion. In Central and South America, where Gringo fishermen are still something of a novelty, guiding is just coming into its own as a profes sion. and the men in the business are first class. All are excellent boat handlers and knowledgable out doorsmen. Many cannot speak F'nglish very well, but this fact might be considered as much a blessing as a detriment After all. when I go fishing I'm more inter ested in catching fish than listening to my guide's domestic problems. If he can handle a boat and point out the best fishin' holes, that's all I require. The best fishing guide I know of is a grey-haired lad named I addie Buchanan I met Laddie on a Braniff Outdoor Council trip last year and more recently accompa nied him on a fishing expedition in lower Patagonia. Laddie's beat is the Andes region of Argentina, and fisherman in the purest tradition. But, though a real ar^lt with a fly rod. he readily admits tllit a Dardevle spoon or Vlep* spinner is sometimes more deadly for tlfe big trout that inhabit his fishing waters. He knows more aboyt fishing than any other man I ever met, but you would never know it from his words or actions, Laddie is a professional in the truest tradi tion. If there were more like him in the rest of the world, fishing far ho rizons would be even more exciting than it is today. But, because all of us won't have an opportunity to fish with a man like this, and because a fishing guide is still important when fishing strange waters, I suggest we use a little common sense in our associa tion with these folks. If we did, we could upgrade the product and re store true professionalism to guiding. Here's how it works. If you let your guide fish instead of helping you catch fish, take a siesta instead of doing the shore lunch dishes, or drink up all the beer in your cooler, you're doing a disservice to all the rest of us. Even worse. I may get that tame guide one day and have to watte valuable fishing time straightening him out. ALEXANDER LUMBER CO. •BKSI OK KVKKYTIIIM.
