SECTION 2 - PAGE 5 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1,1978 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 29, 1928) Sheriff Cyrus Sanford fur nished plenty of music for the county court following a raid in which the general store at Harmony, in the north end of the county, was the scene where forty-four "Harmony Boys" were apprehended Fight pints of moonshine were confiscated besides a large number of gambling devices. Karl Gretschel, proprietor of the store, was taken into custody that night, but the other forty-three were booked <Av the sheriff on a promise of appearing in court Thursday. Twenty-nine persons caught in the raid pleaded guilty and were fined $5 and costs, (iretschel's fines totalled $2,256, when Judge Charles Mien was through adding them up FORTY YEARS AGO Residents of Lily Lake, who on Nov. f> voted 38 to 7 in favor of organizing their small community into a village, may 1** disappointed Flection of officers for the proposed new village, which was to have been held Dec. 3, was ordered vacated bv county court at Woodstock. By using these three levels of grading, they hope to inspire the students to strive for a higher goal each quarter. The purpose of the system is not merely to give praise to the above average students but to give recognition to their abilities and to give those students to whom studiH^'1 are a little more difficult the initiative to strive for better marks. Msgr Raymond Hillinger, bishop-elect of the Rockford diocese, who will be con secrated as bishop in Holy Name cathedral, Chicago, will be installed as head of the Rockford diocese in the Roman Catholic church in a ceremony scheduled for Jan 14 Samuel Cardinal Stritch. archbishop of Chicago, will preside at the installation in St James Pro- cathedral in Rockford and also will preach the sermon TEN YEARS AGO < Taken from the files December 6, 1968) of It was a close race between the stork, the turkey and the train last week In the interest of a happy ending the stork emerged winner, but not before he encountered interference from a few tons of metal in the passenger train The turkey remained in the background, coming to the fore only in the final chapter to provide a fine Thanksgiving dinner to "runners". The race started in Wonder Lake when Mrs. Genevieve Oeffling decided a trip to McHenry hospital was in order as the birth of a child was imminent With her husband. Terry, at the wheel, the auto approached the second evening passenger train which had stopped at the station Parked behind four cars, the father to- be thought he could pass them a n d g e t a c r o s s t h e t r a c k before the train started In stead, the car was caught by the train and dragged over 100 feet The car was demolished, but fortunately no one was seriously injured Mrs Oeffling was admitted to the hospital and gave birth to a pretty new daughter thirty-five minutes later tetter {f&M, h&tM- Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Soviet dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn startled a lot of Americans when he spoke to the 1978 commence ment at Harvard University. "We have placed too much hope in political and social reforms," he warned, "only to find we were being deprived of our most precious possession: our spiritual life." Where did Solzhenitsyn, who served in Soviet prison camps, get this insight into spirituality? U.S. Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina can tell you. When Solzhe nitsyn visited Helms in Washington in 1973, he described how he had sunk into depths of despair while in prison, unable for a long time to contact his family or friends. One day during a 10-minute break, he decided the only way out was suicide. The easiest way to commit suicide would be to pretend to escape, fully realizing he would be gunned down before he had gone more than a few hundred yards. As he was getting to his feet to make such a break, a new prisoner who had just joined his work gang looked at him. Then, without a word, this fellow prisoner drew a cross on the ground. "I realized then," said Solzhenit syn, "this was a sign from God that I was not to take my life." When he returned to camp that night, he was told he was being released. Thus he was able to begin his work of documenting the horrors of Soviet life. Had he given in to that moment of despair, the world would never have known his great works of genius as an author. R. J.
