Plenty of activity to keep one busy, and all the coaches and players are looking forward to the coming seasons. Hie Warriors basketball team jumps right into the fire tonight when they tackle the Golden Eagles from Jacobs. Jacobs is one of the pre-season favorites to take the title. The Warriors although playing without a letterman returning and a bundle of inexperience, are an exciting team to watch play basketball. Their spirit and enthusiasm in the Sycamore tourney was something to see. They will have their ups and downs, but you can believe they will be in there trying all the time. I like what I sawveven though they lost two of the three games, they •i-i never gave up, even when the more talented DeKalb team had ttem on the ropes. ijij As m football the schedule makers put the two top teams in the opening game. Crystal Lake Central is everybody's favorite, except the writer's. In looking over the Fox Valley for this season I will go along with Crown to come out on top, followed by the Tigers of Central. Jacobs to finish third, followed by Cary iji Grove. Woodstock to top the second division with Gary Collin's crew at South to finish sixth. I'm taking the Warriors for the seventh spot, and hope they prove me wrong, and Paul Judson will wish he was back coaching •j: the girls as I pick the Cards to finish in the celler. Marty Sobczak, Warrior wrestling coach, after hosting i|: Dundee tonight, will go to Woodstock tomorrow at 1:00 :£ p.m. The J.V. squad will travel to Harvard, and the freshmen will be here at McHenry. The wrestlers defeated Streamwood last weekend, and if the veteran coach can keep his team healthy, both from iji; sickness and injury it could be a banner year. Congratulations to Diane Peterson on being selected to the Fox Valley All Conference Volleyball team. I'll bet iji; that Father "Pete" is really smiling these days, and he iji; was every right to do so. ijij Word comes that Marty Zeller, former Warrior, is a starter on the Baylor University five, and they won big ijij over the past weekend. Also Steve Koeber's Oklahoma City team defeated rival Oklahoma University over the holidays. It is nice to hear that two former Warriors are playing big time basketball and starting on their respective jij teams. Another honor to a former Warrior. Tom Ludwig, son of Coach Ken Ludwig, has been selected on the 1978 College Division All State Baseball team, composed of all colleges in the state of Illinois. Tom was a pitcher, and still has the smoke ball. i;i; Don't forget plenty of Warrior action this weekend. Basketball and wrestling tonight, and wrestling tomorrow Try and get out and cheer the teams on to victory & Diane Peterson All Conference Player In Volleyball Diane Peterson senior member of Coach Pam Schaefer s McHenry High volleyball team was selected by the Fox Valley coaches to the All Star team The meeting was held at Crystal Lake South High .School on Monday evening Diane was praised not only by her coach but by the other coaches for her fine all around play this past season FOX\ \LLEYCONFERENCE \LI. McHENRY ILL PHONE: 385-2014 Kverytime I mention a place like the Amazon jungle some folks con jure up visions of head-hunting In dians and a snake draped on every vine hanging over a game trail Such is not the case. I find the wil derness cordial and hospitable if the rules of the game are obeyed Caution is the byword in the wild All of nature's creatures prac tice it A deer hesitates at the edge of the forest and delays for long moments before venturing into the clearing A bull elephant and big cats like jaguar or lion exercise sim ilar caution in their daily existence And. so should we Actually, the average man should make an even greater effort to keep his eyes and ears open in a wilderness environ ment because he's a little out of his element. Failure to do this is the cause of most mishaps in the field. Here's an example: While in Africa a number of years ago I had a desire to catch a tigerfish and planned an expedition to the Zambezi River in Rhodisia. Arriving at a likely site I fould schools of these gamefish feeding voraciously in a rapids formed by a scries of rocky reefs which stretched several hundred yards out in the river The fish were big and the action was wild, so I threw cau tion to the wind and waded out into the river to reach the feeding fish. All went well for M) minutes or so I had a half dozen strikes and succeeded in landing a couple of tigerfish during this period. Only out of the cor ner of mv eye did I observe a big log whicn was slowly floating to ward me, and I paid it no heed Suddenly this log transformed into a 14-foot crocodile intent on making a meal out of me I reacted Throwing the rod and reel in the river. I splashed toward shore. The croc was behind me all the way, but aided by my guide, I made it I learned from that experience, though. Any critter dumb enough tu wade a hundred yards out into a crocodile-infested river almost de serves to come to an early end This experience and others has made me a very cautious man All expeditions are planned with care. I never venture into a boat without life-saving gear aboard. I have a survival kit which goes with me on every wilderness expedition I'm alert when I stalk down a game trail. I even carry a spare compass in my toilet kit. This type of attitude does not arise from fear of the wilderness, but from respect for it. With such precautions I'm safer than driving down a freeway or operating a chain saw In the backyard If you'll do the same, you can enjoy our wilderness as 1 do and avoid accidents.
