STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Sports Ink by Randy Swikle The snow kept coming It had been falling gently, but very steadily It was Friday afternoon, and three men were huddled around the telephone in the assistant principal's office at Johnsburg High School A very frustrated Skyhawk basketball coach Bob Kies and his assistant Jim Albright listened intently as athletic director Jim Meyers conversed with Marengo school officials The Marengo officials had just called to express their desire to cancel the evening's basketball game at the Johnsburg gymnasium due to dangerous road conditions The snow storm had hit Marengo first, and when the call was made almost seven inches had already accumulated. The time was 2:30 p.m. The Johnsburg students had just been dismissed following a spirited pep rally for the basketball game They were intending to see a basketball contest that night, and Meyers knew that if the game were cancelled at this late time it may be difficult to get word to the community. Coach Kies did not want the game cancelled. It was the home opener against a conference school, and Kies had hiS learn Ufc: Kies wanted his squad to have the home court advantage when it opened its conference schedule and particularly in its first match with the powerful Marengo team Last year the Indians advanced to the supersectionals. and this year three returning starters are on the team I Kies knew that if the game were cancelled there would be the possibility that the makeup game would be scheduled or. a date after Johnsburg would travel to the Marengo gym He wanted to meet Marengo on home territory first For the next half hour Meyers and his Marengo counterpart conferred with county law enforcement officials to obtain an Update on road conditions By 3:30 p.m it was apparent that no one could accurately predict what the weather conditions would be in the evening Meyers had no choice but to honor Marengo's request, and the name was called off The bad weather caused several other local schools to cancel basketball games and other activities Friday, although four schools in the Shark Conference went ahead with their games Beloit Catholic traveled to Harvard and defeated the Hornets 67 to 57 Hononegah lost to North Boone 68 to62 ,* Kies and his Skyhawks will remain untested in the Shark Conference until this Friday when they travel to Hononegah On Saturday. .Johnsburg hosts Wauconda in a non-conference contest Two victories this weekend would give Johnsburg the Momentum it wants to enter another busy weekend of basketball on Dec 15-16 In the Friday night game Johnsburg welcomes Beloit Catholic, Kies former school Grant visits the Skyhawk gym for Saturday s contest Ol'T OF" THE INKWELL...The 1978-89 sports schedule at Johnsburg High consists solely of basketball -boys and girls-this year Officials are hopeful to inaugurate a wrestling program at the high school next year Coach Bruce Harbecke has his varsity and junior varsity girls basketball team working hard in preparation for the first game on Dec 19 against Grant at Johnsburg High Auto Service Tips The only thing some car owners Know about the universal ioint is that it is one of the most-often replaced parts of their machine There is a reason The Universal |Oint provides a f lexible connection for the dnve shaft at the transmission and rear end, permitt ing the drive shaft to move the up and down motion of 'he car and rear wheels thus a constant strain Wear <s indicated by a slight backlash or v bration, and servicing general ly requires replacement REPLACE mm GLASS IN^ [ STORM DOORS r- with • TOP QUALITY 'ACRYLIC Glass Clear S d l e f y A p p r o v e d P r o t e c t i o PLASTIC • Non-Yellowing P r i c e d Like Glass GLAZING • Shatterproof Gia /e requ i res no spec ia l sk i l l s a i I t i s easy to cu t , saw and t r im mdow open ings . Today's Youth BY PATRICK DUDGEON Teens Healthiest From a strictly medical point of view, teenagers are the healthiest segment of American society. Death rates, hospitaliza tion and incidents of heart dis ease and cancer are very, very low for adolescents. There are some .factors, however, that tend to undermine the health of teenagers in the Un ited States Traffic fatalities, un wanted pregnancies, suicide, homicide, rising rates of drink ing. smoking and drug use put a blur on an otherwise healthy pic ture of young adults in this coun try Psychiatrists agree that one of the most important transitions in a life span occurs during adolescence. Hormonal and bodily changes that are as great as any after the first year of life are encountered In addition, social and emotional changes are undergone during the teen year It should also be pointed out that the rate of teenage child birth has been dropping -- es pecially among blacks -- be cause of improved contracep tion and access to abortion. Whether society will continue to agree with these loosening mores remains to be seen Cigarette smoking among teenagers appears to have leveled off, researchers say, at about 20 per cent of the younger population. The show consists of acts in tumbling, uneven bars, juggling, dance, balance beam, pommel horse, vaulting, adagio and mini-trampoline. After just finishing a very successful performance at Parkland Junior High, the g> mnasts will be traveling to McHenry Junior High on Wednesday. December 6th at 1:40 pan. Pictured in back, left to right are: Bill Hartmann, Mary Bazan and Bob Hartmann. front. Dina Sturm. 'Buck Rogrrt I can remember uhen the local weather man used to come nght out and say whether it was going to rain or nol A few years ago there was none of this "30 percent chance" busi ness, or there's "a likelihood" of a free/e tonight, or there's a "pros pect for a cold winter No. sir. Back in the gotnJ old days folks might hase thought the local weather prognosticator didn't know what he was talking about, but at least he was honest enough to admit it This isn t true today. l ately I've been trying to predict the cost of my fuel bill this coming winter, if 1 should buy a new pair of snow tires, or whether I should pack my bags and head south when the snow be gins to fly. I couldn't get a straight answer. Hither all the weather men have given up and gone on welfare or they've been associating with too many politicians. But, I found out anyway Before the days of radar scan ners. government weather maps, and big-bosomed TV prophets, a feller used to look around him to find out w hat was going on When he heard a "rain crow" (yellow- billed cuckoo) holler at sunset he knew that it was likely to rain be fore morning When the kingfishers and bank swallows built nests low on the creek bank he could almost be sure they were in for a dry sum mer When crickets chirped louder than normal and spiders wandered around in a da/e. something was almost bound to happen That's how I found out we're going to be in for a hard winter When I fished in Alaska earlier this summer, 1 found out that the herds of migrating caribou were two weeks ahead of schedule A friend of mine, who flies co pilot for BranifY, told me he was flying over Iowa in August and saw big flocks of blue wing teal already heading south. So, 1 began to get suspicious. I called an Ontario fishing camp owner and he admitted that the moose calves, born this spring, had hooves splayed a mite more than usual He also told me that the bea ver pelts were thicker than he's seen in many a year. Now. thcrte are bad signs. To be absolutely certain. I went down to the supermarket and checked on the new onions in the bin You know what'1 The skins on those onions were twice as thick as they normally are. So, 1 can tell you it's going to be a hard winter II you'll look around you'll sec the signs, too. Note the unusually large mast of acorns this year, the si/e ot the hickory nuts, the fur on the squirrels in your backyard.
