The millions of Americans who purchase bonds regularly through the Payroll Savings or Bond-A-Month plans have asked thousands of questions about savings bonds and their bond holdings Many are of interest to anyone who pur chases, or who is thinking of purchasing savings bonds A few of these quesions. with the answers, follow Q -- I have noticed some inconsistencies in the redemption tables for Series F. bonds For instance, an E bond issued in June 1951 is worth more than one issued in May of that year How did this come about0 A - Series F bonds issued prior to September 1976 in crease in value of the end of each six-month holding period It is logical, then, that older bonds will always be worth more than newer There are however, exceptions caused b> the following circumstances In 1959. for the first t ime outstanding F bonds were granted an interest-rate in crease along with new issues The regulations provided 'hat the increase would become effective with the first interest period beginning on or after June 1. 1959 As a result , a June 1951 issue began to earn in terest at the higher rate im mediately. while the May 1951 bond did not begin to earn the higher rate until ' November 1959 In the five-month interim the June bond passed the May bond in value, and continues to be worth at the end of corresponding interest pe-iods Interest rate increases in December 1965. June 1968. June 1969.
