The following thoughts have been expressed by David G. Plocher. Extension adviser, agriculture for tfte county) McHenry county is changing! Is the change good or bad? Will growth be controlled, stopped, or will i t run out of control? Will a wise land use policy be set up in McHenry county? Will the population projection of 240,000 by the year 2.000 be a reality? Where will these extra people live? Will i t be on your more productive farm land or on land not well , suited to food production? How much land has been taken from production since 1967? How much will be lost next year? Will ground water supplies support the increasing demand of rural home wells. How has the past growth affected the services that support your community and your county? How will the future growth affect these same services' ' Will food production per acre of crop land increase enough to offset those acres of farm land lost from production9 Will nation and world food shor tages be a future crisis to face' ' Will food costs to consumers rise as some of your best farm land is lost from crop production9 Will you and your fellow citizens speak up for the type of land use policy you want9 Will the majority or minority make the decision9 I have some facts that will assist you in answering some of the above questions You have the final say A total of 20,954 acres of farm land was lost from production between 1973 and 1977 ac cording to the township assessors annual farm census This over 5 percent of our total land area McHenry county average corn yield was (>8 bushels per acre in 1954 It has generally increased since, with some grave exceptions In 1960 yields dropped to 61 bushels per acre after hitt ing 76 the year before In 1970 they dropped to K0 bushels per acre from the previous year 's 92 bushels Worst of all failures was in 1974 when the McHenry county average corn yield dropped to 68 bushels per acre after reaching 93 in 1973 and 100 in 1972 These crop failures were not stopped It is unlikely any future failures will be When the corn supply falls the price goes up All con sumers pay the price of in creasing food costs Police and fire protection, util i ty services, and trail sportation systems are forced to meet the increased needs of a growing community Increased demand increases costs It has been stated by soils experts that the best larm land will usually make the best home sites The land does not have to be altered, septic drainage is good, and wells are easily drilled A home or business built on less productive land costs more in the areas described above usually the owner pays these extra costs Increased food costs because of a food shor tage are paid for by all con sumers The decision is before you The end result will be up to you and your feedback The comprehensive zoning or dinance will be discussed at the zoning board of appeal hearings set up for each township iij McHenry county Informational meetings are being conducted now You can go to any of the township hearings and present your views You will be asked if you wish to make any statement There is no other special procedures Following are the special hearing dates locally and the locations where zoning district maps will be placed for your inspection Maps of a township will be only at their respective townships.
