%> On The Sidelines By Dick Robbitt This week gyms will be filled from Rockford to Carbondale, from Kankakee to the Mississippi river. It is holiday basketball time in Illinois, and is only second to the state tournament. It is a time that coaches like, as they can play and see different teams that are not within their own conference. Often teams from the same conference are entered in the same tourney, and do meet in holiday play. We always dreaded the thought that the Warriors would meet up with Mundelein in the Kankakee tourney when both teams were entered. The ideal of traveling 100 miles to see McHenry vs Mundelein was not our idea of a good time. In this year's Elgin tourney Dundee and the Warriors are the only Fox Valley teams entered, but they are paired in the same bracket, and there is a good possiblity that they could meet in the second game. However, if my draw was correct this will not happen. I picked out of the hat Ridgewood to win the tourney, the Cards first round opponent After my pick, Coach Ken Ludwig told me that Ridgewood was the number one seeded team in the tourney. Of course if Dundee and the Warriors both lose they Will meet on Thursday, or if they both win they will meet. The two teams just played last week, and will meet again in February It is too bad that tournament officials could not at least put them in opposite brackets. Teams, enter holiday tournaments to get away from conference competition, and it would be nice if each tourney would only accept one team from a conference. Elsewhere on the sport page you will notice the standings of Girls Basketball in the Fox Valley. After one game there were eight girls who scored 20 or more points. In comparsion after one game in the boys division there were only three 20 points or more in the scoring column. It will be interesting to see if the girls can keep up this pace throughout the season. If so a lot of records will be broken. Speaking of records Congratulations to Scott Dixon on his 38 point record breaking performance for the Skyhawks Scott's performance had me dig into the files to check on the McHenry High scoring record, and it likewise is 38 points Going down memory land once again I find that in the 1961-62 season Paul Morenz, who later was captain of the Badgers, scored 38 points against Crystal Lake on 17 baskets and 4 free throws During that season Paul came from behind to nudge Roger Eckert of the Blue Streaks for the scoring title in the North Suburban 326 to 325. That pits Pell, a former Bear Bryant pupil and coaching aide, in competition with his former boss. Florida is in the Southeast­ ern Conference, and plays Alabama--and hasn't been beating the Tide for years. It may take Pell a while at Florida, but one suspects he'll make the Gators competitive. If he does that as quickly as he made Clemson competitive, he'll be giving Alabama one of its big games by 1980. Alabama can no longer be accused of playing an easy schedule. This year the Tide took on Southern Cal, Nebras­ ka, Missouri, etc.-in addition to Southeast Conference foes. But it 's also true that in recent years no giant has emerged in the SEC to challenge the Tide. Tennessee once contested the conference title almost an­ nually.
