PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, lt79 Hampshire Tourney Champs Trophy Time For # BSA EARL WALSH <-« ' v S61 Hear SPORTS EDITOR Chris Dixon of Johnsborg looks for someone to pass to as Marian Central players apply a half-court defense during Thursday night's tournament game at Hampshire. As one Marian player falls out of the way, Darryl May (left) and Jay Grover (right) try to trap Dixon. The pressure defense wasn't enough however, a$ Johnsburg controlled the tempo of the game and easily defeated the Hurricanes 71- 4C In the semi-final game. The Skyhawks went on to defeat Streamwood 62-53 in the Friday night championship game to win the first place trophy in the holiday classic. Marian rebounded with a win Friday night over Hinckley to take third place. Dixon, playing with a fever, scored ten points in each of the final games to help pace the Skyhawks, who now have won six straight games. By Randy Swikle • The Northern Illinois Classic tournament at Hampshire turned out to be a surprise package for many of the basketball fans who braved icy and snowy roads to attend the eight-team event. Pre-tournament favorites Burlington Central and Jacobs were eliminated from the championship bracket in the first round, and the title game matched two first-year schools: Johnsburg and Streamwood. It was the Skyhawk club of Johnsburg that walked away with the biggest trophy, upending Streamwood 62-53 in Friday night's championship game. And it is the rather novice Skyhawk team that has surprised many fans with a six- game winning streak and has caused them to wonder whether the Johnsburg victories represent a series of "upsets" or merely the standard per formance of a vastly un derestimated team. , One thing that hasn't been too surprising is the steady per formance of senior guard Scott Dixon. The Skyhawk captain netted a series of 20-foot shots in the first quarter to set the pace of the Johnsburg victory over Streamwood. Dixon, who leads the team in scoring and in assists, added 14 points to the Johnsburg cause for the second night in a row. Dixon could probably be scoring a lot more points, but he passes up a number of shots to feed the inside men for easier baskets. He netted 70 percent from the field during the tournament and had 20 assists. Johnsburg held a steady lead over Streamwood throughout the ball game, but the Skyhawk offense suffered somewhat when coach Bob Ki«s was forced to remove point guard Kerry Christy to bring in more rebounding power. Johnsburg was doing poorly under the boards on both of fense and, defense, and Kies admitted he had to sacrifice the ball-handling talents of 5'8" Christy to concentrate on pulling down more rebounds. The results were effective in stopping 6'6" Streamwood center Gerald Younglove, who scored 13 of his 21 points in the first half, but the loss of Christy's quick passing skills were missed. Several times the ball was not moved fast enough to reach Johnsburg players who found openings at the basket. Johnsburg's big man, Don Bentz, scored all 16 of his points during the second half. He was one of the leading scorers in the tournament. Chris Dixon, who was recovering from a fever, proved he was hot on the court as well, scoring 10points for the second consecutive evening. Senior forward Lenny Pecucci had an excellent night collecting 14 points on the strength of five field goals and four free throws. Johnsburg won its way to the championship game by defeating Marian Central of Woodstock 71-46 in semi-final action Thursday night. The Skyhawks controlled the pace of that game throughout the entire evening. Bentz earned Johnsburg's high scoring honors with 18 points, and Scott Dixon and Brett Zimbrick each hit for 14 points. Jay Grover scored 10 points for Marian Central and Jay Huemann got 8 points. Marian Central received the third place trophy in a victory over Hinckley Friday night. The potential of Johnsburg's basketball team is probably no longer as surprising as the inconsistency in performance amorig some of the players. The Dixon brothers and Bentz are by far the most consistent players. Junior Tom Schoenig is also showing some consistency in performance and has been particularity impressive in pressure situations. Zimbrick and Pecucci have had on and off nights. In Friday's championship game Zimbrick shot seven times before hitting a single bucket; the night before he scored 14 points against Marian. Pecucci had one ? field goal in the Marian game ahd collected 14 points in the Streamwood contest. Because he has only seen limited court action, the per formance of junior Hick Szumlas is also uncertain. Much of the inconsistency is reflected not only in scoring, but also in other offensive and defensive aspects of the game. It is something that Kies will have to work with his players to improve if he expects to maintain a championship club. The Skyhawks continue conference action this Friday at South Beloit. The South Beloit team is currently in the cellar of the Shark Conference with no victories in three contests. Next Tuesday, the Skyhawks host Round Lake. Jerry (Curly) Rogers is wearing a cap in cold weather. He brought that lid back from his trip to Ireland where the shamrock, not necessarily the hair, grows. Johnny Morris,- TV sports announcer and former Chicago Bears star, knows a lot about football and girls with class (quite a gal, his wife Jeannie). But. we have to disagree with his idea that the basket should be lowered for girls teams. We pointed out recently that the Hustle girls were lobbying to no avail to have the basket lowered, then took the floor and scored 137 points. It might help if we could get Johnny to start a campaign to have the baskets lowered for little kids in grade school. Is there any reason why a fifth grade player should be expected to hoist a ball up to the basket the same height as used by a 7 - foot giant? • As of now it looks like this will be known as the year of the big snow. Any more will be too much. Members of the Snowmobile Club won't have to go north this year to find the white-stuff. But, some like the northern trails. We still don't believe it! Notre Dame beat Houston in the Cotton Bowl 35-34 in a last second effort after looking like they were over-matched when the score was 34-12. Told that "Old German", Bob Blake, that you can't beat the Irish. He walked away from our Fox Hole table muttering something. If football has ever seen a more thrilling finish, they will have to dig into the record books. J The likes o'that O'Montana shook down the thunder and the cotton from the skies. Michigan lost to USC 17-10 in the Rose Bowl. Or, did they? Camera replays make it clear that a fumble near the goal line was recovered by Michigan and the ball still hasn't crossed the line. The record book shows USC the winner. All that remains for Michigan players and fans is to sing that old refrain "We Wuz Robbed". To show what a great expert I am, Alabama beat Penn State 14-7. Of course, I picked the loser to be the winner. The kiss of death. Woody Hayes, deposed coach of Ohio State, may have been a smart football man, but not much can be said for his prowess as a bare-fisted puncher. Trying to land a haymaker on the jaw of a big player wearing a mask and headgear, hardly puts the wild man in the top class of intellectual giants. Seems good to get back on schedule. Our Wednesday column had to be written last week. Now to catch up. The Good Lord has taken another good and honorable man from our midst. Dr. William A. "Bill" Nye. Dr. Bill followed in the footsteps of his father in safeguarding the health of many and bringing many back to stable health. He ushered hundreds into this world, then cared for their well being and did the same for the next generation. Through all his crowded days., Dr, Bill never lost his sense of humor, chuckle and smile that spoke more eloquently than words. He was firm in his con victions, but fair in his con clusions. / So, with a prayer, we say so long to one of the few remaining country doctors whose presence and superb bedside manner brought comfort to great numbers in our com munity. That kind of medicine doesn't come in bottles. The Warriors played a super first ha» of basketball They out- rebbunded the Rebels 18 to 6 during the first two quarters, and led at the intermission 18 to 16. However. the Rebels rebounded in the second half, and with a tenacious defense held the Warriors to a mere nine points in the final two periods 4o win easy 46 to 27. Tonight they face the Wood stock Blue Streaks in a Fox Valley game, and tomorrow night Fremd of Palatine will be the visitor. Splitting a pair of games in the Elgin Holiday tourney, the Warriors are eager to get back into Fox Valley action. The "Streaks," are currently in last place in the Fox Valley, one game behind the Warriors. Coach Jack Brenegan's Woodstock crew are having their troubles this season. They are winless in the conference, and won one of three games in the Wheeling tournament held the past week. Senior forward John Schroeder is the leading Streak scorer, and the one the \Yarriors will have to watch tonight. Dan Kinney, Chris Bellairs, Rich Berlin and Dave Peart are other Blue Streak starters for tonight's game. Tomorrow night Fremd comes to town. The Vikings are coached by former Zion mentor Mo Tharp. The Vikes won one of three in the recent Elgin tourney. They are led by two guards. 5'9" Ken Boeckh and 6'4" Pat /Griffin. According to the Viking coach, "the team has not jelled as yet this season". We hope they don't start until next week;* The Warriors have shown improvement throughout the season. They played a good first half against Ridgewood at Elgin. But the second half they c o u l d n o t g e t u n t r a c k e d a n d scored only nine points going down to a 46 to 27 defeat. firttttnt Itai MV V - ̂ N R Y T I R E M X R T ROGERS PLACE YOU SAVE!
