I will! answer these questions that Iteve been asked, to help you understand your obligations under J he law in regard to your driving privileges in Illinois. First, did everybody see the key word in that lastlsentence? The word is privileges That's right, driving an automobile in Illinois is a privilege, not a right. You have the right to request a driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in Illinois; however, it is up to the secretary of state as to whether or not he extends to you the privilege to drive. If lie does give you the privilege to drive in Illinois, lie will also demand that certain things be done by r. to insure the le in Illinois that you. the drjve rest of the peop you are a responsible person and are willing on the conse and able to take uces of vour actions while driving a motor vehicle. The state requires that you obey all the laws governing the safe operation of an auto in Illinois, such as obeying the speed limits, stopping at all stop signs and Stop lights, driving in your own lane of traffic, not driving while you are drinking, etc. Also, the state demands that you keep your vehicle in perfect con dition. such as good tires and brakes, proper lighting at night, a working horn, proper registration, etc. One of the most important things the state demands is public liability insurance on all vehicles. Liability is the minimum allowable insurance demanded, to protect other people's property and life from your mistake. If you want, you can also get further coverage to protect yourself from yourself, such as collision insurance. If you fail to obtain insurance for liability, and you do have an accident, the state will be notified of that fact, and your license plates and driving privilege will be withdrawn. Also, a note to all you juvenile drivers who still have a state curfew restriction. If you are caught driving a motor vehicle after the legal curfew hour of 11 p.m. Sunday through Thur sday. and 12 p.m. Friday and aturday. you should know that our driver's license is invalid after the curfew hour, and you will be given a ticket for being an unlicensed driver due to curfew, your vehicle could be towed, and you will be taken to the Police department and held until your parents can come and get you. Also, if you are involved in an accident after curfew, the insurance policy that you do have is no longer in effect because you are an unlicensed driver. If you do receive a ticket, the state allows you to post three t ypes of bonds to satisfy the bail required for the arrest. Upon •receiving a ticket, you may post your driver's license, and continue to drive on a copy of the ticket until the ticket is settled, you may post a bail bond card from an insurance company which is issued to you in your name which guarantees that you will take care of the ticket; or you may post a cash bond in the appropriate amount. You will receive two copies of the ticket, one yellow, and one blue. Unless it is marked on the front of the ticket that you must appear in court, you may mail in the fine and plead guilty without having to go to court. All? you have to do is sign your name and address on the bottom rear of the blue copy and mail it and the fine to the clerk of the Circuit court . If you wish to plead not guilty, sign the top rear of the blue copy to tell the court of your plea, and then appear in court on the date written on the front of the ticket, or the date the clerk tells you. You will have a trial on that date. Remember that. driving in the state of Illinois is a privilege granted you by the state. Please don't abuse the privilege.
