Memories Of The Holiday Sometimes ihey are called forgotten but are they really? What of the 10.000 or so men, women and children who live in one of * the 28 facilities operated by the Illinois Department of Mental Health and Develop­ mental Disabilities? How did they fare during the holiday season? There were many who. for one reason or another, had no home, family or friends to go to. Still others were mentally or physically unable to leave the facilities. But, for those who stayed, caring and dedicated persons, employees and volunteers alike, did their best to create a festive and loving at­ mosphere so that the so- called forgottens would also enjoy the holiday spirit and fun. Planning started early. In schools, of­ fices, industrial plants and at meetings of fraternal, civic and social organizations in Illinois, and in state-line c o m m u n i t i e s o f surrounding states, people set about preparing to give of the­ mselves to bring the season to the emotionally ill and developmen tally disabled persons in mental facilities. As the time ap­ proached the planning i n t e n s i f i e d , m o r e persons joined in and t h e e x c i t e m e n t mounted. Not a person in a facility from Waukegan to Anna, spent the season in loneliness or neglect. For many, the holidays meant a trig home. For a treasured FIRST CHILD Tom and Norma Weyland, 1420 N. A n e s p e c i a l l y poignant moment oc­ curred when a middle- aged, severely retarded and physically han­ dicapped woman lifted her hand from the arm of her wheelchair to touch the sleeve of a burly high school athlete. He was about to leave her cottage at the conclusion of a sing- along. She barely managed to say "Merry Christmas, thank you." He left quickly in an effort to prevent his classmates from seeing the tear roll down his cheek. Others didn't bother to hide their tears - tears of joy and realization that their holiday would be more meaningful because of what they had done -- taken the time to care and do for others.
