PA^E 10-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 17, 1979 Letters To "Gopher" (For C.B. Owners J For answars to spocifk questions writ* (do not call) "Th« Gopher", in care of McHenry Plaindealer. 3812 W. Elm Street, McHenry. I)yar Gopher, How do you go about a "ftelay" to reach a C.B.er on the road for an emergency message? "Sleepy Eye" The proper way is to contact your Local Police department for an "Attempt to Locate". If you ask for REACT to assist specifying to the dispatcher the motorists' Handle, F.C.C. Call Sign, and channels he hangs on, with his vehicle description and license num ber, and approximate route he takes, the dispatcher will phone a local REACT to go into Operation. This way, the chances of reaching the motorist is almost 100 percent. You will have the squads on the rdute watching for him as well as the airwaves trying to reach hi'm. We recommend that it comes diTect from the Police department because the in- foVmation is correct from the beginning and stays consistent. It; doens't end up like the children's "telephone" game ddwn the line. Each REACT base is telephoned the message to dispatch over the air, therefore there is little chance of getting the message twisted as it travels down the line. Please remember, relays of this type must be of an emergency nature only. Also, this means REACT and I, District 2 State Police monitor, \dll only start a relay if it comes direct from a police department by telephone. As a final note, it would be cdtirteous to phone the police department to cancel the "Attempt to Locate" when the p&Vty has been reached, and inform how he was reached, bear Gopher, ts it legal to talk skip over iB.? "Big Chef" There are two ways I can take this question. Accidental skip talking or deliberate skip talking. To deliberately talk skip, you need to have a linear or booster in your possession, and this is illegal. It is also illegal just to talk further than 155.3 miles. Deliberate "skippers" must be quite rich, because the minimum fine begins at $100; then the linear, distance, no -» call sign, length of time, etc., starts adding up to quite a tidy silm! Just using regular power and using your call sign will cost you $100. The local C.B.ers are reporting them. Accidental skip can even be dangerous for you, F.C.C. stated. Skip, the agent said, accidental or not, can be fined. It would be up to the Com mission to decide. So C.B.ers, beware! 4-H NEWS Health Awards - The Lincoln Cloverleafs, McHenry, has received one of ten certificates given in the state for its club health program. 4-H'ers gave smoking demonstrations in the schools and demonstrated emergency bandaging at the state fair. This younger group of veterans has bought 1.8 million houses. Housing guaranteed by VA during the past three years exceeds by nearly $10 billion the assistance provided veterans during the entire decade of the 1960s. According to VA loan guaranty officials data they have received in dicates nationwide housing starts rose slightly during the third quarter to an annual rate of 2.07 million units. VA housing starts have shown the same general pattern as nationwide data. . On a seasonally adjusted annual basis VA starts reached 135,000 in October. This was the largest annual rate recorded since April. This means that the total VA housing starts for 1978 should be only slightly lower than 1977, which was the highest total in 21 years. Veterans interested in home buying through the VA loan guaranty program \should contact their nearest VA regional office, veterans vice organization or (veterans assistance center. TAX FACTS | American taxpayers filed almost 34 million Form 1040A Federal income tax returns in 1978. The Internal Revenue Service expects even more to be filed this year, so they've supplied the following questions and answers on the Form 1040A to help you decide whether you, too, should PAGE 11 -PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 17, 1979 change to the shorter torm. Q: Last year I filed a Form 1040, but this year I would like to file a Form 1040A. Is it okay to change? A. It is, if the Form 1040A suits your tax situation. Generally, if the total of your itemized deductions is equal to or less than your zero bracket amount, you'll be better off filing a Form 1040A. LIGHT BULBS REDEEMABLE THRU JAN. 20.107S $3,200; for single persons Jl's $2,200; and for married persons who file separately, the zero bracket amount is $1,600. If your itemized deductions are greater than the zero bracket amount, you should stick with the Form 1040. IRS encourages taxpayers to make a "ballpark" comparison before they do all the work required by the Form 1040. If the 1040A is , the form for you, don't hesitate to use it. Q: Are there any other ^factors to consider when deciding on which form I should use? A. Yes, but they're basic. Assuming you've decided not to itemize, your income must be $40,000 or less if you're married and filing a joint return; $20,000 or less if you're single or married and filing separately. Whatever the amount of in come and filing status, the income must all have come from wages, salaries and tips, with not more than $400 in in terest or dividends. Q: What are the advantages of using the Form 1040A? A. It's easier, for one thing. There are no Schedules to complete or attach-just the Forms W-2 (Wage Statements). The entire form is printed on one side of a page so there's no need to flip back and forth. Calculations start at the top of the page and move step-by-step to the bottom, so the 1040A also takes less time to complete than the Form 1040. Q: Isn't there some way to get around doing all the math? A. There certainly is. Let the IRS compute the tax. Just complete the form to the line that says: "If you want the IRS to figure your tax, stop here and sign below." Then sign the form, date it, and mail it to the IRS by April 16, 1979. That's all there is to it. IRS will figure the tax in the way that's most beneficial to you, including the Earned Income Credit if you qualify. Then, they'll send you a refund or a bill, as ap propriate. Q: Where do I get the Form? A. If you filed a Form 1040A last year, IRS will automatically send you another. If you didn't receive a tax package in the mail or if you filed a Form 1040 last year, you can get your Form 1040A from any IRS office, Postal Service station or at many banks. Home Canning Canning at home? Don't forget that foods not covered with liquid will end up with poorer quality Topping A flaky, rich pastry topping onto a good meat and vegetable stew equals a tasty meat pie.
