Schools are held for 1) Private Applicators - Farmers applying their own chemicals, 2) Agricultural Pesticide Dealers and Applicators - those that apply or over see the ap plication of custom applied chemicals for agriculture, 3) Urban dealers and applicators - for those selling or applying pesticides to non agricultrue areas. " Local schools for private applicators will be March 7 in Woodstock; for Agriculture dealers and custom applicators a school will be held Feb. 27 in Morris and 28 in DeKalb; urban dealers and applicators, two schools will be held at Rosemont (near O'Hare air port) Jan. 30 and 31. Contact my office for a registration form for these programs. Winter Tomatoes • I continue to get vegetable seed catalogues and am amazed at the new items on the market. Now being tested and available on a limited basis is a tomato variety designed for winter. Yes - it is planted late, har vested green and ripens as it sets over the fall and early winter. The plant is still in the testing stage and the best harvesting and storage techniques are not yet clear. They are available though if you purchase enough supplies from the specific company. Soybean Germination Servic The Illinois Department bf Agriculture and DeKalb Far Bureau are sponsoring this service which is available to you. You are entitledto a total of five free sample%Jteeause of the time, temperature, and equipment requirements corn and soybeans are the only seeds that can be tested. A representative sample should be sent - approximately 2 pounds. Take or mail your * samples to State of Illinois Lab., DeKalb County Farm Bureau, 315 N. 6th street, DeKalb, 60115 Call 758-3666 for further details. Soybean Seed Treatment? - Should you consider a soybean seed treatment as you purchase your 1979 crop production supplies? Consider seed treatment a must if these two cases exist. First if you plan to plant early and second if you plan to use less seed. Remember that seed dryer than 11 percent will crack easily in the seed treatment process. Soybean Cyst Nematode • You may never have expected to see alfalfa weevil in McHenry county, but it is here. You may never expect to see soybean Say good-bye to Mr. Dry Air! Roadside Markets • If you do not read my column every week, this is the fifth article in roadside market series. InTmy^vterprise innovators are those people who are the first to try new ideas. They are the risk takers. In management "risk takers" are considered "profit makers". If you are considering a roadside market, here are some innovative ideas to consider in roadside marketing. 1) Take notes - write down good ideas you see, don't count on memory, 2) Pricing - try new ideas to move products, 3) Display signs - stress the value of the crop not just price, 4) Salvage waste - poor produce may be able to be used if caught in time. You will have waste if you are selling "good" produce, 5) Ethnic foods - do you have a potential ethnic market, 6) packaging - the less there is the better, 7) signs, the easy way - make them durable and easy to "freshen-up", 8) listen - do you know what your customers are saying. Other comments are included in the market conference proceedings. Potent Statistic • U.S. wine consumption has reached a record 7 qts. per person - a tip grape enthusiasts may ap preciate. Grapes are not a largely grown commodity in McHenry county, but quite a few home gardeners and one commercial grower do raise them. Before you rush out to buy grape plants of your own - Be' informed. They are sweet to eat and fun to drink, but they can not grow just anywhere. We have some facts - contact us. Home and Garden Tips • Ac cording to DuPage county Horticulture Adviser-Jim Schuster here are a few tips for January. 1) Check houseplants for bugs and disease. Control the problem or discard them. 2) Carefully remove any heavy snowfalls from evergreens and other important plants. 3) Design 1979 flower and vegetable gardens. Sunny Days - Lack of sufficient light is one of the difficulties house plants must survive in late winter. Even shade-loving plants, such as African violets, begonias, and ferns, appreciate exposure to bright light -but not direct sunlight--at this time of year. Insufficient light, until about March 1, coupled with high temperature and dry conditions in the home may encourage long, leggy, weak growth. Plants in east, north or west windows get very limited amounts of light during the winter months. Sheer curtains over very sunny windows cut down direct sunlight too. i V.A.
