By Dick Rabbitt players scoring in Coach Ken Warriors literally of Cary-Grove own gym Friday 70 to 55 Fox Valley the Trojans with Jeff Downs having a hot hand, due partly to a poor Warrior defense, opened up an early le&d on the Warriors. With two minutes remaining in the first period the Trojans led 20 to 10, and things looked bleak for the Warriors. However, after a timeout, the Warriors regrouped, and with Tim Zeller leading the way narrowed the margin in the next two minutes to four, trailing 24 to 20 at the period. In the second period Tony Sroka and Jim Johnson began finding the range and the Warriors went out at the in termission with a 34 to 30 lead. Len Jensen and Sroka put the Warriors ahead by eight, and then both teams traded baskets the remainder of the period for a Warrior 52 to 44 margin. In the final period the Warriors got into high gear and miscues on the part of the Trojans resulted in the Warriors putting the ball in the hoop. And as a result won easily 70 to 55. The Warriors were a dif ferent club from the one that played at home last weekend. Tim Zeller with 18 pts., played his greatest game of the season. He was a thorn in the side of the Trojans all evening, both on offense and defense. Jim Johnson showed a little more hustle under the basket and as a result picked up 16, mostly on good rebounding position. The quarterback of the team, Len Jensen, had a good night' with 16, and had many assists for his teammates. First time starter Tony Sroka picked up 5 field goals, and it seemed they were always at the right time. Old reliable Brett Thomas got 8, but was a demon on the The Warriors showed a lot of hustle. Except for a lazy six minutes on defense in the opening quarter, they were in complete command of the game. Improvement has been made throughout the season, and with the second half of the schedule in front of them, the Warriors should make it interesting for their future opponents. Totals: McHENRY T. Blame the snow. This year marks the 135th birthday of the YMCA idea. Begun in London, England for a handful of young workers who gathered primarily to study the Bible, the YMCA spread rapidly, reaching our shores in 1851 when the first U.S. Y opened in Boston. Today, the YMCA, with nearly nine million registered constituents in the United States and millions more in 88 other countries around the world, is vastly different from the first Y. Participants cover most ages and both sexes. Programs run the gamut from learn-to-swim to exercise programs for post cardiac patients, from camping to international exchanges, from programs for trouble youth to programs for military families. This week, YMCAs across America, including the Lake Region YMCA are celebrating YMCA Week. What better time to salute the Y for its many contributions to a richer, healthier life for people both here and around the world. The YMCA... it's an idea that gets better and better. TENUIS * * * BY PETE FRITCHE WASHINGTON, D. C. « There's little doubt now that John McEnroe is the coming giant of U.S. Tennis. There are even many who think he's already that giant, with a bet ter game than Jimmy Connors. McEnroe was impressive in recently defeating Bjorn Borg, in Sweden, in straight sets, for the Swedish title. He has just won the David cup for the U.S., with the help of a doubles victory on the second day, in impressive style. McEnroe's behavior on the . court has been poor, as was that of Jimmy Connors in his early years. Why so many Americans lack good court manners is anybody's guess (one suspects much of the blame can be attributed to shouting, common-behavior commerq^Styteleyiston in this country). But our players have a long, bad reputation in this public relations field. Whatever the reasons for behavior problems on court, McEnroe's game is deceptive ly superb. Watching him, one doesn't initially see, the power and pressure of his game. But it's there, in overall mastery of all shots, and the accuracy to make few errors. If he keeps on improving, McEnroe will surpass both Borg and Con nors and very likely dominate tennis for years.
