Wrestling for Crown last year, Zimmerman won a cham­ pionship in a different district tourney. In a meet that started after the dinner hour, the McHenry high swimming team won its opener of the season 101 to 68 over Rolling Meadows high school. A winning season and a pair of titles were won by the eighth grade girls basketball team of Johnsburg Junior high. The girls were undefeated during their 12 game season while capturing first in the con­ ference tournament and winning the Fox Valley Eight Conference championship. Bill Lulow, bowling for Don's Submarine, bowled a 728 scratch series. Bill had in­ dividual games of 244, 237 and 247. The series is the highest in three years at the McHenry Recreation bowling alley and the highest in the county this year. Getting out of North Suburban league play for a change was a tonic to the Warriors as they defeated Main North by a score of 61 to 52. Coach Bill Blankenhorn's sophomore cagers picked up two more wins when they defeated Zion Benton 47 to 42 and Maine North 66 to 44. At the sectional wrestling tournament at Barrington high school McHenry's aggressive 167 pound wrestler, Mike Zimmerman, captured third place and qualififed for the state wrestling tournament in Champaign. Coach Gary Gray's McHenry high freshmen cagers closed out their season losing to Libertyville 61 to 50. They defeated Zion Benton 55 to 50, ending the season with a record of 12 wins and 6 losses. Crown tipped the Warriors in an overtime thriller, 71 to 70. MARCH ' The Warriors of Ken Ludwig defeated Libertyville 62 to 52 before a group of fans and students that had the gym rocking to the rafters. M i k e Z i m m e r m a n , McHenry's star wrestling Warrior of the season, traveled to the University of Illinois campus to wrestle in the annual state wrestling tournament. Although Zimmerman lost his preliminary round match to Tony Banks of Chicago Schurz by a 10-4 decision, he still can claim with pride that he is one of the top 24 class AA wrestlers at 167 pounds in the state. Coach Bill Blankenhorn's sophomore cagers closed out a very successful season by defeating Libertyville 68-63. The win was the eighteenth of the season for the Young Warriors against only 5 defeats. The McHenry high girls badminton team won its first meet of the season by defeating Hoffman Estates 5 to 2. The "Fighting Warriors" once again reached the- regional finals as they defeated the Belvidere Bucs here by the score of 62 to 61. If any awards were to be presented after the game, they certainly would go to the student cheering section. The "Water V arriors" lost their first meet of the season when they were defeated by Waukegan East 51 to 32. The McHenry high Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig won another regional championship when they defeated Hononegah of Rockton 47 to 40. It was the fifth regional title for the Warriors in the past seven years, ever since the I.H.S.A. split into two classes. The McHenry high girls basketball team won two games as they defeated Elgin 63 to 61 in overtime and Lake Forest 44 to 30. The McHenry high school lighting Warriors" lived up to their name as they went down to a 51 to 46 defeat at the hands of Antioch in the Sec­ tional tourney in Rockford. M i k e ^ Z i m m e r m a n , McHenry's 167 pound wrestler, was honored by his teammates as the most valuable wrestler of the 1977-78 varsity wrestling squad. At the annual wrestling awards banquet at West campus, the star senior was presented with the coveted trophy as a result of an alt-team vote. A The Chicago Bears will test their basketball ability against the McHenry high faculty in a benefit game at West campus. Coach Mike Shanahan's McHenry "Water Warriors" ran their season record to five wins and two defeats as they easily defeated Elgin and Dundee. Doug Oeffling, senior guard of the McHenry high Warriors, was named "Mister Basket­ ball" of the Warrior squad the past season. Along with this award Doug was named most valuable and also won the free throwing award with a 66 percent average. The most improved player of the year was given to Jeff Par- tenheimer, a senior forward. Captain A1 May, North Park college senior forward, ac­ cepted the national cham­ pionship trophy for North Park's 21 straight victories. Dr. Donald Kidd of McHenry won first place trophy in a men's singles tennis torunament at the Lakeland Tennis club. He topped the entries on a point system that included ten matches for each player and never lost a set throughout the tourney. Four members of Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry high Warriors were among thirty county athletes who were honored at the annual banquet. Jeff Partenheimer and Doug Oeffling were selected for second team honors in Class AA and Scott Dixon and A1 Rein- boldt were given honorably mention recognition. APRIL The McHenry high tennis team won the No. 2 and No. 3 singles, finished second in the No. 1 singles and No. 4 and took all four first places in the doubles to easily win their own Quadrangular meet. Several McHenry high and Marian Central local boys were honored at the All-County basketball banquet held in the Marian Central cafeteria.
