The Old Bridge captured the 1978 Twelve inch championship by defeating King's Row 16-5. The win climaxed as 3-game sweep in the finals over King's Row, and an undefeated season in overall league play. In the Varsity division Marian Central won the meet with a total of 73 point defeating runner-up Lake Zurich by 17 points. Johnsburg's sophomore football squad, plagued with inexperience, lost its opening game of the season to Grayslake 28-0. Coach Gary Gray 's McHenry High girls tennis team ran their record to 3 and 1 with a 4 to 1 victory over Grant. The freshmen football squad brought Johnsburg High School its first pigskin vcctory as the Skyhawks blasted the Rams at Grayslake, 18-6. Sue Hutchinson, No. 1 singles player for the McHenry Girl's tennis team, captured second place in the Dundee in vitational. Sue defeated Tomi Pokornv of Elgin academy 6-0, 6-2 and Carol Miller of Hoffman Estates by scores of 6-3, 6-2. In the championship match against Dawn Paulik of Elgin. St. Ed's, she lost 6-4 and 6-3. Sue Hutchinson, junior, won the number 1 Singles championship by defeating Karala Hultgren of Elgin Larkin, 6-0, 6-1; Janet McMurray of Antioch, 6-1, 6-2; and in the championship match Sue defeated Kathy Trinka of Jacobs 6-2 and 6-0. Sue's record for the season is now 14 wins and 2 losses. The McHenry high girls volleyball team swept all three games over Wauconda. The McHenry high golf team defeated Zion Benton by the score of 150 to 171. It was the eleventh win of the season against one tie for the local golfers. The Shawnee College Saints have signed the tallest basketball player in the college's athletic history with the signing of Mark Mayer of McHenry. Mayer is 6'7" tall and weighs 210 pounds in playing condition.
