NOVEMBER Coach Cis Morner's McHenry high school girls field hockey team qualified for the state finals at New Trier»W«&t by i defeating Woodstock 2 to 1. -J ' The Skyhawks of Johnsburg downed Beloit Catholic 20-0 in a Shark conference battle at McCracken field Two pass interceptions in the final minutes proved the downfall of the Warriors as the Gators of Crystal Lake South came from behind to win 26-20. The Hornets football team beat Hound Lake 45-0. The win raised the Hornet record for the season to 5-3 and they are currently tied for second place in the Northern Illinois Junior Football leage. Marching 57 yards in 11 plays in the final period, McHenry Warriors came from behind to defeat Crown 20 to 16 in the final game of the season, season. The Skyhawks lost the final game of the season to South Beloit 46-24. The Marian Central girls volleyball team won the Harvard invitational tour­ nament. the fourth straight year the Hurricanes hav^ finished in first. For the second time in a week McHenry high school will send a team to the state finals. A1 Eheroth, a junior on coach Chuck Cuda's McHwiry high golf team, qualified for the state finals to played in Springfield. A1 shot a 40-37 for a 77, good enough to be a state qualifier. The McHenry Warrior golf team bidding for a second consecutive trip downstate, missed by five strokes when they finished in fourth place in the Illinois High School Athletic association Class A sectional tournament. Sue Hutchinson won the Hound Lake District tennis championship in the number 1 singles. On her way to the championship Sue defeated Sue Ordorizzi of Waukegan West, 6- 2, 6-0. Lisa Jackson of John­ sburg, 6-0, 6-0. In the semi finals she defeated Julie Barnes of Waukegan East, 5-7, 6-4 and 6-2. A brilliant performance Dy halfback Bill Hovseth paced the Johnsburg Skyhawks to their first victory. Hovseth, a junior, scored three touchdowns to lead Johnsburg over Valley Lutheran 30 to 20. The Marian Central golf team finished in eighth place in the Class A state golf cham­ pionships held in Springfield. Carmi won the meet for the fourth straight time. Mark Vogt, senior fullback on the Warriors was named the Most Valuable player by his teammates at the annual football awards night. Randy Wright, a junior on the cross country team, was named Most Valuable. The McHenry high school pom pom squad won first place in Germantown, Wis., in competition with 19 schools. The Johnsburg Skyhawks opened their basketball season by placing second in the Round Lake tournament. The Skyhawks defeated Round Lake and Fenton before bowing to tourney champ Wauconda in the championship game of the round robin tourney. DECEMBER Johnsburg high school senior Jim Smith was named captain and most valuable runner of the Skyhawk varsity cross country valuable award to Bill Heinrich, a senior, an offensive center, who scored the most goals ever for a McHenry player. Sue Hutchinson, a junior on Coach Gary Gray's tennis team, was selected as the most valuable player. The Marian Central high school girls' volleyball team team. The "Canes" were lead by Joy Spengel of McHenry who was high scorer and Patti Thelen, also of McHenry who was second high scorer. The Skyhawks won a thriller over Grant high school by scoring two free throws with four seconds left in overtime that gave them a 67-65 victory. The Skyhawks romped over Beloit high for their first Shark conference win, 72-54 The McHenry Warriors broke into the win column for the first time ever in the Fox Valley Conference by defeating Dundee 65 to 51. Johnsburg extended its winning streak to three in a row by defeating the Richmond- Burton Rockets, 90-57. The Hawks ̂ continued their winning ways by defeating Jacobs high school, 55-52. x The McHenry Warrior wrestling team used its strength and skill to good ad­ vantage, placing fifth overall, at the annual Grayslake fresh­ men tournament. Taking first plaqe medals were Scott Sch- mitt and Tom Ketc Libertyville in the first game of a doubleheader. The Warriors won game two, and a loss by Mundelien in a doubleheader with Zion, gave the Warriors the North Suburban conference championship in baseball for the first time.
