Ceremonies for the second j straight year, at the third i annual Johnsburg Oldtimer's ! Club baseball dinner. | The dinner is scheduled for ; Jan. 22 at the Johnsburg • Community club Memorial hall I for 7 p.m l~ Lloyd has been the WGN i^radio voice of the Cubs since | 1966, and his voltage of en- \ thusiasm has made him one of " the most respected names in sports broadcasting. He ha«u|>een the recipient of hundreds of awards since he became a sportscaster, in cluding the Illinois' Out standing Sportscaster Award presented by the National SPortswriters Association. In addition to baseball, Lloyd also presents the play-by-play of the college football Big 10 game of the week. The main speaker at the banquet will be former White Sox star Bill "Moose" Skowron. In addition, Chicago Cub Larry Biittner will be in attendance, as will White Sox shortstop Harry Chappis. Former major league umpire Art Frantz may also attend. The proceeds of the dinner support an athletic scholarship fund at Johnsburgh high school, which will be awarded for the first time this year. Biitner was acquired by the Cubs in 1976 with Steve Renko for Andy Thornton. Since joining the Cubs, he has played first base and outfield and is considered one of the most consistent players on the club. In his first full season with Montreal in 1975, Biittner batteg .315 to lead the club in hitting. In 121 games that season, Biitner only struck out 33 times. Known as a line drive hitter who can hit to all fields, the 6'2" Biittner hit very well last season against his former Montreal teammates, as he batted .320. The slick-fielding first baseman is a teacher in the off season. In 1970, Biittner had an outstanding minor league season, batting .3247. He was nosed out for thtfeague batting title that year in the Eastern league (Class AA) by Greg Lusinski (now of the Phillies) who hit .3248. Larry's performance that year earned him a berth on the Topps' Class AA All-Star team. Information about the baseball dinner can be obtained from Harry May or Jerry Wakitsch. SPORTS EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR It is Tuesday -- And there is good tonight! news The weatherman has an nounced a shift in the big snowstorm scheduled to give us another one two punch. »Way Back When, McHenry didn't have to worry about snow plowing. Cars were stored and covered for the winter. 4 Sidewalks were the big issue, scoop shovels and backaches were (he order of the day. /Then came George Meyers aid his one horse plow to open fc-ttie sidewalks McHenry was a itie-horse town in more ways rrihan one. One horse or not,"it was McHenry and we loved it. Very seldom did the schools (^ose because of weather. If fs*Tbey waited to close them, there ras no way to spread the word. Io radios No TV sets ~ One time the pipes froze in tjie building known as the ^KflHigjichQ!£l. now Landmark. That madehjost kids happy. After the days when basketball teams travelled to other towns in bobsleds or by train, automobiles began to appear. Players of one of McHenry s greatest town teams like "Zeke" Bacon, Gus Freund, Sib Whiting, "Marty" Conway, Jim Fay and others will remember such trips as they made to Hinckley to play one of the better teams in Northern Illinois. It was a caravan that left McHenry through the snow. When a car slid off the road, the whole group stopped to push it out. "Canopy John" Karls kept his popular Riverside Drive restaurant open when our teams played out of town and the place was packed when the crowds returned. If you had a quarter or wanted to splurge and spend 35 cents, you had a good lunch. Then the ever popular Johnny would take your money and tell you, "If it wasn't for the overhead, I wouldn't charge you a cent." An unsigned letter takes the Daily Sentinel and McHenry Plaindealer to task about lack of coverage on Marian Central sports. The school being located in Woodstock, we always thought the Sentinel gave good coverage. I have always regretted that the Plaindealer sports staff was not large enough to <~iver ac tivities outside oui main readership area. With that in mind, it has been our practice each year to ask the school to send in any sports news they wanted printed. Last fall I wrote a letter asking for such cooperation, again explaining our position. Those were days when small towns had big teams, importing players. McHenry players were all home grown While loyal to McHenry High, I do not back up an inch in my interest in the success of Marian Central. The take at the gate wasn't heavy enough to pay those imports, but some of the town sports placed some big bets on the games. Maybe they paid travel expense to those stars. When a fund drive was started in McHenry County for construction of Marian, Harold "Zeke" Bacon was the chairman. i BASKETBALL I SCOREBOARD I FOX VALLEY CONFERENCE | GIRLS BASKETBALL •jijCary Grove 2 1 ijijC.L. The coverage might not be as extensive as given locally, but with so many students and athletes from our area in the county school, it would be interesting to follow their progress. Even if you have to pray a little, do something to bring fair weather next Monday night. That is when the annual baseball dinner will take place at the Johnsburg Community Hall. No new reports from the hustling committee except to let you know that a limited number of tickets are still available. Don't walk -- rush to the phone and call either Jerry Wakitsch or Harry May. They are the boys to talk to if you want a ticket. 1 Clearing 1 | Off The | | Sports Desk | "HOOPSHOOT" CONTEST Bud Oost, exalted ruler of the Woodstock Elks Lodge No. 1043, has appointed Gib Kurtz, chairman of the annual Elks National "Hoop Shoot" (R) free throw contest. Wrestling Tourney Here The annual McHenry Junior Varsity wrestling tournament proceeded on schedule at West Campus last Saturday, despite the winter blizzard building up outside the Buckner Gym walls. Crown J.V. wrestlers took top honors as a team, claiming 3 championships, 3 second place winners and 2 third place winners. Second place as a team went to North Chicago, followed by Jacobs, Zion-Benton,\Crystal Lake South , McHenr^, Dun dee, and Crystal Lake^Central. Warrior Wrestlers captured one championship, one second place, one third place and two fourth places. Mark Betancourt was named champion in the 145 weight class when Dundee's Gale Irvin forfeited due to an injury. On his way to the number one spot, Betancourt decisioned Bill Mortenson of Jacobs 8-5 and pinned Trice of the Zee-Bees in 2:41. The aggressive junior now boasts a second record of 8-3. Freshman Dart Clark of the Warriors worked his way to second place in the 132 pound class by pinning John Daly of Dundee in 2:13 and decisioning Lott of Zion-Benton 10-9. Clark lost to Jeff Leaf of Crystal Lake South in the championship * match by a 23-3 decision. With only four heavyweights entered from the eight schools, Armando Gomez of McHenry had little difficulty claiming third place. Although he was pinned by Zion-Benton's Johnson, Gomez bounced back to decision Hannah of Dundee. 5-1. Warriors taking fourth places were Scott Zimmermann at 98 pounds and Vic Betancourt in the 126 weight class. Both wrestlers lost in the first round but picked up wins in the consolation bracket. Junior Varsity wrestling coach Brian Wilsoa was well pleased with the wrestling of his eight Warriors. As usual, the tournament was smoothly run by Head Coach Marty Sobczak. Fresh man Coach Bob Ludwigsen and the hard working mat helpers. Montini Clinches Conference Title The Montini eighth grade boys basketball team captured the Fox Valley Junior high league championship. The Mustangs clinched the title with a 39-31 victory over the second place Richmond Rams. The win over Richmond extended the Montini con ference record to 11-0, with one conference game remaining. Overall, the Mustangs boast a very fine 19 win, 2 loss slate. Montini sharpshooter Jim Leon paced the conference champs with 16 points against Richmond. Despite early foul trouble, Bill Hermann chipped in 9 points and had an excellent floor game. Mark Thompson and Tim T r u c k e n b r o d p r o v i d e d rebounding strength that was need to overcome a big Rich mond front line. The hustle of Ed Kennedy and several key baskets by Gary Freund were important aspects of the Montini victory Two last minute free throws by substitute guard Steve Aim clinched the league cham pionship for the Mustangs A major factor in Montini's success has been the tremendous effect of all team members. Jeff Gies provided the scoring punch in the Mustangs come-from behind victory over Fox River Grove earlier this season. Jeff Smith, John Zabielski and John Wegener have been fine defensive players throughout the season Other standout performers off the Montini/ bench include Tom Wember and Kevin Plautz.
