THE FORCE is applied by Junior Rivera of the Warrior Wrestling team during last Friday's match against Cary-Grove. Time ran out in the match, before Rivera could score any points for this hold against his opponent, and he dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision. McHenry lost the match 48-4. This weekend, the Wrestlers travel to Crystal Lake South for a conference dual meet and Saturday they host Palatine Fremd at West campus. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Crystal Lake Tigers Will Be Here Tonight The McHenry High Warriors will host the Tigers of Crystal Lake Central tonight in a Fox Valley league game. The Tigers under new coach Tom Wilkins were off to a bad start, but as of lately are coming around to the ball club expected this season With four lettermen retur ning, the Tigers were expected to break out of the starting gate with a rash of victories, but early season losses to South and Dundee have the Tigers in third place. However, don't sell the Tigers short. They have a lot of talent, led by Tom Pence, Ralph Statter, Neal Bertram, and Mike Schaefer. These four boys can play on apyonj team, and are beginning to j« under a new system put in by Wilkins. The Warriors, fresh from a victory over Cary Grove, showed a lot of improvement over the past several weeks. Although a definite underdog in tonights game, as in past Tiger- Warrior games anything can happen, and you can bet the Warriors will be loqking for another win in tonight s game. a »i iii OUEENIE by SO says th6 VA... The Warriors will host the Tigers from Crystal Lake Central in a Fox Valley league tilt. Marty Sobaczak will take his grapplers down the blacktop to Central for a dual fnatch. Mike Shanahan girls swimming team will attempt to get to the the East Aurora Invitational. This is easy to say Tuesday night, who knows what is in store for us by Friday. The Warriors showed a lot of improvement last Friday night at Cary-Grove. After the first six minutes, I would say they played a super game, but along with the loyal fans I had my doubts during the first six minutes when they were trailing 20 to 10, and the Trojans seemed to have the game well in hand. However, a few words of wisdom by Coach Ludwig changed the whole picture, and they won easily 70 to 55. Hope they can continue to play the same brand of ball throughout the rest of the season. The McHenry High Booster Club is looking for Alumni to help them out for their game on Satuday, Feb. 17. If any alumni are interested, contact Bill Blankenhorn, Twig Miller or this writer. The club is trying to help out the Athletic Program at the high school, and all help is appreciated. The rumor is that two surprise coaches will /come out of retirement to handle the teams. That in itself will be be something to see, High School football is back in the news. The Chicago Catholic League is going to split into two divisions. This is on one condition, that each winner will be able to participate in the state playoffs. With only sixty-two conferences in the state in five divisions, this will leave runnerups and independents little chance to gain a berth in the playoffs. Rumor is that we will have six classes next year instead of the present five. The following year other conferences will want to split in order to gain another berth in the playoffs, and in a few years we will have ten divisions or classes. The present set up has been successful, and with the playoffs at I.S.U. going to be a week earlier, why change the system because of fourteen schols, who did not enter the state series in the beginning years. They thought Spring practice was more important than the playoffs. After all the glory of winning the state championship, they entered , and I must confess they have been successful with St. Laurence and St. Rita winning the Class 5-A title. Am looking forward to meeting old friends at Johnsburg Old Timers baseball get together on Monday. Tickets are still available, call Harry May or Jerry Wakitsch. It is really a fun time. Earning points against Dundee were Brian Wrona (119) 13-6 over Jim Carlson, Ed Hughes (155) 6-3 over Steve Muscal and Junior River (138) who tied Rob Yucius 3-3. Hughes earned the only McHenry points against Cary- Grove. scoring a major decision over Steve Siatta 8-0. Hughes, a junior, has a 7-5 season record, sophomore Wrona now stands at 8-10 and senior Rivera picked up his fourth tie of this season, making his record 6-7-4. Tonight the Wrestling Warriors travel to Crystal Lake South for a conference dual and then tomorrow they host Fremd at West Campus The non-conference mat action begins at 1:30. FOOTBALL * * * BY PETE FRITCHIE WASHINGTON, D. C. - Bud Wilkinson began slowly but by the last game of the St. Louis Cardinals' season, it looked as though he had ignited a fire under his team. On the last regular sched uled Sunday (Dec. 17th) the Cards shocked the Falcons from Atlanta, 42-21. And Atlanta had a ftne team, which made the playoffs. That's not bad for a team which began with a long string of losses and which some thought would never get into the win column--on the theory that Wilkinson was too old, that his college experience wouldn't apply to pro coach ing, etc. The theories were interest ing but Bud had his gam coming on at the end of J-ne season and the theories aye no longer necessary. Once a(good coach, always a good cpach, when as keen a student of the game, as young at heart, and alert and in shape, as is Budy Wilkinson.
