V PAGE 14-PLAINDEA1.ER-WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 24. 1979 Johnsburg Mary L. Gunderson 385-3052 Greetings Are Extended To Former Residents We would like to say "hello - how are you?" to former residents of Johnsburg who are now living in warmer climes but still keep in touch with us through the McHenry Plain- dealer. To Marie and Raymond Krueger, Arizona, John and Rose Schmitt, California, and Harry and Esther Dubsky, Florida, all formerly of Jak- Ana Heights, Johnsburg, or nearby. No doubt you have been reading all about our "big" snow, so want to assure you that what they say is true! As Ed Sullivan always said, it was a "big-g show". We won't say, wish you were here, but there is a lot of beauty to be enjoyed, a sparkling cleanliness, a resultant of families getting to know each other better, because businesses, schools, churches and roads closed. The lack of the whizzing of cars, barking dogs, leaves a gentle quietness to be enjoyed, but not for long. Even the snow shovelers were quiet, because the 12 inch snow or more they removed at various times never made contact with driveways or walks. We are still prepared for another storm, according to weather reports, but we did miss the one anticipated two days ago, so we may be lucky again. - When the first fall was an ticipated, like true pioneers we took stock of our food and shopped, so here we have no problems. Our electricity and gas are true allies - so we graciously sit back and wait for Spring. Rescue squad managed with the help of plows. Telephone lines are busy. We believe many postponed tasks have been accomplished by some folks, who had no children home from classes, letters written, cleaning closets, taking down Christmas decorations, etc. So think of us, as we so often remember you • and if we are not aware you were also an old friend, let us hear from you! P.T.O. "DRUG AWARENESS" The Parent-Teacher organization meeting planned at the Johnsburg high school auditorium for Tuesday, Jan. 16, 7:30 p.m., was postponed due to the bad weather. JANUARY 24, 1979 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 24, 1929) The seventh annual meeting of the McHenry County club was held at the club rooms of the McHenry Pleasure club. President R.B. Walsh was reelected president of the club. After hours of rain and sleet the highways and sidewalks are again sheathed in ice, made all the more slippery by the zero wave, which has again en veloped this part of the coutnry. John Anderson left for Wisconsin to buy a carload of cattle, which he will ship to McHenry and sell for dairy purposes. , The manager of the McHenry A.A.C. announces that two basketball games have been scheduled with Hinckley, one of the best teams in this territory this season. The Hinckley five won its thirteenth straight game last Sunday. FORTY tEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 2, 1929) Milk led all products as the largest single source of farm cash income in 1938 with a total of $1,430,000,000. This was only 6.5 per cent less than the 1937 figure of $1,530,000,000 ac cording to the Milk Industry Foundation. These figures show the importance of milk as a mainstay of farm purchasing power. They are particularly impressive because milk production was estimated to be from 4 to 5 percent greater during the year and sales of fluid milk were down ap proximately 4Vfc percent from 1937. William M. Carroll, present state's attorney of McHenry county, informs the Plain- dealer that he will submit his name to the McHenry county Republican Central committee and through the committee to the people of the Seventeenth Judicial circuit as a candidate for one of the judgeships of the circuit to be filled at the judicial election next June. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 28, 1954) McHenry county's oldest practicing physician, Dr. William Hepburn, will observe his^ eightieth birthday an niversary Jan. 30. Although Dr. Hepburn is not able to carry on quite such an active practice as •he did in former years, it is still extensive in that his patients are in the hundreds and range to distant points. The McHenry Townshjp Fire Protection district iv-taking a necessary and progressive step by presenting to the voters on Feb. 12 an opportunity to ap prove a bond issue that will provide funds for a new. modern firehouse.
