"There are many ways to highlight the beauty of wood without always using the standard or ordinary paneled wall treatment." advises de signer Shirley Regendahl. who has just completed a series of exciting wood- oriented room settings for PPG Industries, maker Of Pittsburgh Paints. "One idea that can adapt to many different types of homes and rooms." says the stylist, "is to panel a focal wall with unfinished plywood squares that you arrange in a decorative diagonal fashion, and Finish with country-fresh stain colors that bring the charm of the woodland in doors." The how-to steps in plan ning the fodal wall, and creat ing a woodsy theme for the whole room, are easy to follow--and for the do-it- yourself designer, this type of project provides an easy way to achieve individuality in design. s --First decide on a focal wall. Each square should be saw- cut around the edges one- eighth-inch deep to give defi- nition to the individual blocks. --Next, decide on the grain. Designer Regendahl used birch but a homeowner can select any grain in the un finished plywood and it can be cut into smaller or larger squares, depending on the vi sual effect desired. --Now decide on stain colors that will enhance the grain character and beauty of the wood. Ms. Regendahl used seven different stain colors to blend with the exist ing natural dark oak stained floor in the room she was re decorating. She chose semi- transparent and solid color stains from Pittsburgh Paints' new Rez wood stain system to obtain the elegant nuances of color that would relate to a country woods set ting. -- She combined rich grays, tans and browns in semi-transparent and solid stfrins to suggest a-variety of wood textures. l:olors used were weatKefed shakes, mauvewood, mountain mauve, maple greige, bir- chwood and beaverwood. To further enhance the woodland character, she used a livelier stain color from the redwood family, one called scarlet haw, for the room's divider and coffee table. --Once you have made the important grain and color de cisions, then make a paper pattern of the wall design to Th °rs<fcy, Friday & Saturday J anuary 25 26^ The Toddler Shop And handyman's Closet 3430 W. The stains are from a diversified new Rea stain system by Pittsburgh Paints. In this room created by designer Shirley Regendahl. seven weath ered and woodsy stain colors were combined for the unfinished plywood sheet fireplace wall, plank floor ing, divider and coffee table. The total effect is an elegant flow of woodland color and texture in a room that now is a haven of beauty to run to and enjoy. indicate placement of various stain colors. Number the baq^s of the squares or blocks to correspond with numbers on the paper. Using a plumbline, start at the center of the wall, either top or bottom, and fill in the "half-block" areas around ceiling and baseboard last. Use feither glue or small, No. 6 finishing nails to attach the diagonals to the wall. The process is similar to and as easy as laying floor tile. -- Stain the plywood "tiles" before applying to the wall and alternate grain pat tern, as they are put up, to attain maximum visual tex ture. To stain, use an ordi nary paint brush and apply with grain. Then wipe off the excess and shade as desired to give the surface the shaded quality of natural wood. If the surface will receive heavy use--such as a floor or table top--a top coat of Rez polyurethane varnish should be applied to provide finished protection. According to the'Rez stain people, the basic type of stain to use is an individual choice. There is no doubt that purists and real antique artists will choose oil stains, since they do provide greater penetra tion into the wood. But for the novice at-home stain user, the new latex stains provide more than adequate penetration and offer easy application and cleanup. These new formulations allow more open or working time--which means that there is no frantic rush to hur riedly wipe the stain as soon as it is applied. What is important now--as a result of devel opments that have occurred the past year--is that con sumers can choose color first and know that it will be avail able in either latex or oil base and that there will be more than just the standard ho-hum wood tones to choose from. In addition, new stain for mulations have heavy body that allows the stain to brush or roll on easily to achieve a uniform coating. Revolutionary resting!
