/ 1»AGE 4-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 1979 A HKIJ'IN(> l»AWS ANIMAl WELFARE ASSOCIATION ! j • I P.O. Box 205 * Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 • (815) 459-2641 Trying and not succeeding hurts. In animal welfare work it hurts the animal, and it hurts the worker. During the first Bitterly cold week of the new year a sad incident occurred. On New Year's eve someone called the Helping Paws emergency number to report finding a cat in a state of shock from injuries that looked serious. A visit to the nearest vet was authorized. The cat was held for a diagnosis of injuries while a determined effort was made by HP to locate the owner. The HP office worker called every known agency to see if an owner had reported the loss. I This was a beautiful long haired gray male with yellow- green eyes, un-neutered, wearing a faded flea collar. No owner could be found. The injuries were diagnosed as multiple and^would require extensivemrfgerV. Costs would mount to over $200. Already the bill was $50. Because HP funds are limited they must be spent helping the most animnals possible, and therefore a top of $50 to $75 is generally all that can be spent on any one animal. Since he was an adult his chances for adoption after recovery were slim, so the decision had to be made. He was put to sleep by the end of that week. This beautiful cat was ob viously a house cat. The owner let him out and he always returned. That is, always until when injured so badly he could not return. If an indignant owner protests too late over the death of the pet that owner must realize that an injured animal, oibviously in shock and pain, cannot be he|d in definitely. It certainly %s not humane. ] Again a plea is made to^oat owners who allow their cats to roam to tag them or otherwise mark them with some form of A sad tale, or it could have been if this delightful dog had not been taken into the Animal Control center in Woodstock where the broken leg was set and attention given. Many good dogs are brought to the center and adopted out if an owner is not found. There are some Golden Retriever pups now available. Give a call to check on the condition of this recuperating canine. Maybe you have a home to offer to this dog or any of the others always to be found within their doors. Call 338-7040. If, happily, the cat should return home later, all one has to do is call again and report that the cat is safely home. But those calls make all the difference in saving a pet's life. Your Police Department by Officer Jim Fitzgerald Everyone who drives through the city of McHenry knows that there are a few intersections that are usually very congested, and may take more than a few minutes to get through during the rush times of the morning and the afternoon. Possibly I can give you a few suggestions on how to avoid some of these places, and get around town without having to use those areas. There are traffic studies being done at a few of the key areas by the city and by the state of Illinois, which could, in the near future, ease the congestion of these areas by such things as redesigning the intersection entirely, or by just putting up stop and go lights. Hopefully, some of these corrections will be done this spring. The studies are being done at Crystal Lake road and Route 120, Front street (Rt. 31) and Elm street (Rt. 120), Rich mond road (Rt. 31) and Pearl street, and Ringwood road and Rt. 120. Here are some ideas for geting around these in tersections for the time being. It is very hard to cor the north on Crystal Lake road and then try to turn left onto Rt. 120 to go west. Take any one of the streets south of the in tersection, and go east to Rt. 31, find then go north on Rt. 31 to the signal and use that in tersection. You will still have to wait a little because of the traffic, but you will get through FOUND CATS Two, young, black and white male, female, smokey grey. 385-0846. These two were found as kittens in the fall. Many more cats and dogs both lost and found on our books. Please call if you find or lose a pet; don't just assume they have been aban doned...many are just tem porarily separated from their homes. Call Animal Control to report either lost or found pets 338-7040, or call the Helping Paws office Monday through Saturday from 10-4 at 459-2641. Public Relations Officer McHenry City Police Phone 385-2131 faster by using the lighted intersections. There is difficulty in trying to turn left from Pearl street onto Richmond road. Instead of that, why not turn left onto Green street, go up to the signal and use that intersection It will still take some time; but it probably will take less time than waiting for traffic to clear both ways on Richmond road and then trying to hurry your turn before any more traffic comes. Now, for that big intersection of Front street, Elm street and Waukegan road. This one needs a couple of ideas to make it through, so try and bear with me. First, instead of trying to use"the Rt! 120 cutoff, for eastbound traffic that wants to turn south onto Front, to cross three lanes of traffic to go east on Waukegan, why not keep going east on Rt. 120 until you get to Third, then turn right onto Third street and go up to »"&ukegan that way. I know pat this sometimes saves a lot _ time and anger. r Also, instead of going west on Waukegan and then trying to turn right onto Front and then getting into the left lane of northbound Front street to turn left onto westbound Rt. 120, try this. If you were originally on Green continue south to one of the other west-east streets, and take it west to Front street and then turn right agaiti^ou will be south of the intersection where all the congestion is, and the traffic will be lighter there. It will also be easier to enter the traffic flow, and you will then be in line to turn onto Rt. 120. If you have just turned onto southbound Front from westbound Rt. 120, and have to go onto Waukegan try this. Instead ^of stopping at Waukegan and waiting for the traffic to clear, continue south on Front to one of the other * cross streets, and then turn left on it. Take it down to either Green or Third, then turn left again to Waukegan road. If you must use any of these intersections, please be careful. Plan on taking a little more time to make it through. Remember, give the right of way to the other vehicles that have it legally, and just wait your turn. Also, remember that Illinois does have a "right turn on red" law which states that after coming to a complete stop you may turn right on the red light if there is no other traffic, and you have yielded the right of way. There are only two intersections in the city where you cannot make a right turn oh red: Elm street at Richmond road, for traffic eastbound on Elm street; and at Green street and Elm street, for traffic southbourffTon Green street, by the State bank. Drive carefully. I have a reminder for you regarding the City vehicle stickers. The deadline for display of the 1979 McHenry vehicle stickers is midnight. Feb. 20. At 1 a.m. hours on Feb. 21, 1979, the city of McHenry Police department will be issuing citations for failure to display a city vehicle sticker. City stickers may be purchased at the city hall, in the clerk's office, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Satur day, from 9 a.m. to noon.
