Twice Told FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 24, 1979) The milk strike is ended and this time the producers have scored a victory. Both sides have agreed to leave the matter of price up to arbitration and it is believed that the milk war, which has bobbed up every few years, will at last be settled for sometime to come. The far mers have an organization now, the Pure Milk Association, which it is thought before long will be as near 100 percent as »t is possible to make it, following the successful strike. At a meeting of the American Legion post the following of ficers were elected for the coming year: Commander, Fred C. Schoewer; vice- commander, Peter Neiss; sergeant-at-arms, Henry Nielsen; county delegates, Thomas P. Bolger and A.E. Herrold; chaplain, Albert Barbian. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 2, 1939) McHenry was practically unscathed by the paralyzing blizzard which whipped across thirteen states burying Chicago under one of the heaviest snowfalls on record. The storm was worse in northern and central Illinois, northern In diana and southern Michigan but spread rapidly nor theastward into Pennsylvania and New York state. Traffic between Wauconda and Chicago was at a standstill. . Several high school students in Chicago for the weekend were snowbound and unable to return to McHenry in time for Monday's class. Jack Keenan, well-known painter and decorator, has just completed decoration of the interior of the Albert Barbian home on Riverside drive. This is but one of the many homes in this vicinity which have recently been made more beautiful and modern through the decorative skill of Mr. Keehan. A large number of members of the McHenry Chamber of Commerce and their guests gathered in the high school cafeteria to enjoy a tasty lunch and a most enjoyable program. Jack Buckie, newly elected president of the organization, was installed during the evening, along with other new officers. Bob McCulla, youngest of the three sons of Mrs. Jean Green serving their country, is now taking his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo , and upon completion of it will spend a furlough at his home here. Rt. Rev. J.J. Laffey, Catholic chaplain at the 'Child City", Mooseheart, will be guest speaker at the Moose initiation ceremony at the lodge hall in McHenry. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 24, 1969) The McHenry City Council directed Attorney John E. Looze to draw a resolution to the State of Illinois seeking financial aid in the proposed project of cleaning the drainage ditch which runs through the Lakeland Park area. It is felt that drainage through this area can be greatly improved by clearing the existing ditch. Sandra Senter, a 1968 graduate of McHenry high school, has been seleced to be included in the "Talented Teen European Tour" to be held next July. The young people will fly by jet to London and spend the summer furthering their education. They will be coached in the performing arts and will appear before many live audiences during the European tour. The glamour of a governor's inauguration was enjoyed by a number of McHenry aea residents when Gov. Richard Ogilvie- took office in Springfield. BIRTHDAY TRIP Missing two flights because of the white stuff called snow. Yvonne Petska finally made it to Nashville, Tenn., which was her birthday present. (Nice, Huh!) During her short weekend, she was unable to see Andrew Jackson's Hermitage, the big inaugural parade for the new governor of Tennessee, and the inauguration Bonny said she could't get around to see much because of the snow. They had a whole sum of one inch which paralized everything. She even missed a flight home because they had no way of clearing the runways. All in all, she had a very happy birthday.
