J079 "You can't get milk from dead cow", is the Associated Milk Producers, Inc., (AMPI), response to the prospect of lower milk price supports in 1979. Currently, the price support is 79.5 percent of parity as a result of inflation erosion although on Oct. 1, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland set it at 80 percent. Parity is a figure based on the reported to the center for all of McHenry county. Notifying our office is important too, as we have many pets being held until the owners claim them. Call our office Monday through Saturday from 10-4 at 459-2641. LOST DOGS Russian Wolfound female adult and Schnauzer mix young female, collars, McCullom Lake. 385-5472 evenings. Many times they simply are off for a stroll. If you find an animal, don't By Kathleen Thayer The first meeting of our store committee took place last week. Those in attendance found it to be one of the most exciting projects we have undertaken. Not an original idea, but one that has been used successfuly by the Anti Cruelty society in Chicago, we decided to use our office-store front location to its best advantage. Anti Cruelty has found that since the opening of its store, adoptions have risen sharply. With this goal in mind, we plan to offer pet related gifts for sale, and in the spring will have a few pets on hand for adoption. As of this date, our store is almost ready to go. We have our shelves up and a few items on hand. Our location has been enhanced by the gift store opening right next to us. A few of the artists from the gift store are also working volunteers for Helping Paws, and so there is a spirit of cooperation. We do need more con signment pet related items for sale. Any area resident or in terested artisan may contact store manager Mary Nelson at 312-658-7221 evenings for fur ther information. Hopefully our first newsletter for the New Year will be out to our members and contributions the first week in February. In it we will have full details on our store opening and a special preview opening day party for those who have supported us so faithfully. Once again we would like to call attention to the benefit fund raising event held by Mrs. Roger Reed and Mrs. Stanley Tanan, a Duplicate Bridge luncheon at the CrystaJ Lake Country club on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. Proceeds will be donated to the HP Shelter fund. Tickets must be purchased before Jan. 30, so please con tact Mrs. Reed at 459-8474 or Mrs. . Tanan at 459-1060 for further information. In our article on the benefits of having a "mutt" for a pet, we listed as one of the adorable mixed breeds a Bichon Frisee. We have since found that this was incorrect. Its origin dates back many centuries. The adoption fee for all dogs includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery from a vet our choice or a reduction from the cost of surgery by a vet of your choice. DOGS FOR ADOPTION Weimeraner puppies, 8 weeks assume it has been "dumped". ^ If it is in good condition, it LOST AND FOUND Belongs somewhere and an Please call us immediately if anxious owner may be looking. you have lost or found a pet. By April 1, Bergland must announce the parity price again. Legally it must be 80 percent or above; however, in September he will be able to drop the price support as low as 75 percent of parity. The law requires that the price be sufficently high to guarantee an adequate supply of milk. As the Carter ad ministration fights inflation, however, Bergland is expected to be under pressure to lower dairy price supports and drive prices down by allowing in creased dairy product imports. The support for milk is achieved by government purchases of butter, cheese and nonfat dry milk at prices which enable manufacturing plants, on the average, to pay producers the support price for their milk. While U.S. Senators Robert Dole, R-Kans.; and Gaylord Nelson, D-Wis.; Rep. David Obey, D-Wausau, Wis.; and Rep. Alvin Baldus, D- Menomonie, Wis.; all plan to introduce bills making 80 percent the minimum, AMPI wants 85 percent In a leaflet, the AMPI position is that lower price supports cause wild fluc- tuations in milk prices to dairy farmers and consurners. Irvin Elkin. >\fhery, Wis.,, president of AMPI, which has 30,000 dairy farmer members in 22 states from Wisconsin to Texas, claims that current high beef prices encourage farmers to send their cows to slaughter. The booklet cover shows a picture of a hamburger and the inscription, "This cow won't produce another calf...nor another quart of milk." "Prices supports are alike the federal minimum wage." Elkin said, "giving farmers assurance of a minimal return on their investment and labor " The leaflet traces milk price support levels over the last 10 years and purports to show that higher price supports are beneficial to farmer and consumer. Milk prices are more nearly tied to the price of hamburger than to federal price supports, according to Elkin. "As long as beef prices remain high and milk prices low, milk cow numbers and milk production will continue downward," he said. Free copies of the leaflet, "This Cow Won't Produce Another Calf ..Nor Another Quart of Milk", are available by writing AMPI. P.O. Box 32287, San Antonio.
