Marian is one of eight Catholic schools in McHenry county that serves as the educational institution for approximately 2,800 students. Catholic Schools week is sponsored by the National Catholic Education association and the theme for this year is "Next to the Family, the Catholic Schools/' The NCEA in constructing this theme has stated, "The relationship between the Catholic school and the family is the key to the success of much of our educational effort. The school can serve the child or adolescent by encouraging this vital relationship during a period when families often feel the pressure of these changing times." Father Michael Tierney, director of Religious Studies at Marian, said, "You can count on our Catholic schools being different because faith is part of our education. We believe that all people are understood as God-related and our Catholic schools develop values that flow from the church." Marian will be hosting an open house for all parents and interested observers of Catholic education Thursday and Friday, Feb. 8 and 9. Guests are asked to register in the main office prior to at tending classes. Student hosts will be available to direct guests to various classes. Montini "Catholic Schools -- Next to the Family" is the national theme of this year's celebration of Catholic Schools week, Feb. 4-10. Montini Catholic schools are celebrating this week with special Masses, Feb. 2 at the Middle school, Feb. 9 at the Primary center; Bible vigils and student activities, in cluding a dressup day Feb. 9. The theme is appropriate for Montini, whose philosophy of education is rooted in the concept of school as a rein- forcer of family values and an extension of family life. The formal education of a child is approached in the context of family, and this includes much parental involvement in the schools and its programs. Parents in the buildings throughout the school day are visible signs of this notion of community of home and school working together in a common effort - the education of the child, fhijs motor moms, librarians, aides, etc., are more than just volunteer help; they are vital components of the theological construct. Thus, Montini prides itself on its home-school cooperation and communication which helps to build community, or in this context, a broader family. This can also be seen in the jurisdiction of the schools, with parents managing the school through participation in school board and Parents association activities. This feature of "local control" with very little or none of the controls of federal and state bureaucracies is more »i <i more being seen as a source • strength by society as a whole The American CatholU bishops have chosen the theme for this year's celebration in order to emphasize these facts in a society where the nuclear family increasingly comes under attack. Montini is very proud to be a part of this tradition. Income Tax Forms Available Illinois taxpayers who need 1978 income tax forms can obtain them at 'several locations throughout the state. The Low Serves You Copyright Laws Protect The Author A person who writes an original poem on a sheet of paper has a copyright to the poem as soon as the poem is completed. At that time the author may register the copyright claim with the Register of Copyrights. In addition, when the author publishes or places the work for public distribution, whether it is registered or not, a notice of copyright must be placed on the work, and if the author fails to apply this notice to all copies, the copyright may be lost forever. The notice must include the word "copyright" or the symbol (c), the year of first publication, and the name of the owner of the copyright. This notice must be placed on the work in a conspicuous location, such as the title page. According to the Illinois State Bar association, a copyright is a type of protection granted by federal law which concerns the creative works of individuals. The owner of a copyright is granted certain exclusive rights (with some limitations) to work, such as the right to: 1. Reproduce the copyrighted work in copies or phonorecords; 2. Prepare derivative works (adaptations) based upon the copyrighted work; 3. Distribute copies to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership ; 4. Perform the copyrighted work publicly; and 5. Display the copyrighted work publicly. Copyright protection extends to original works of authorship (published or unpublished) which include literary, musical, artistic, dramatic and other types of intellectual works. Copyright protection does not extend to such things as ideas, procedures, concepts, or discoveries. Nor does it prevent the use by others of the ideas or information contained in an author's work. Copyright ex tends only to the form in which ideas or concepts are ex pressed. Generally, copyright in a work created after Jan. 1, 1978, starts from its creation (when it is written for the first time) and lasts for a term consisting of the life of the author and fifty years after the author's death. For works made for hire, anonymous works, and works under an assumed name, the term is 75 years from publication or 100 years from creation, whichever is shorter. from HISTORY'S SCRAPBOOK DATES AND EVENTS FROM YESTERYEARS February 2, 1962 -- A Marine Corps corporal, John Uelses of Quantico, Virginia, becomes the first pole vaulter to reach 16 feet.
