PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 7. I»7» Warriors Bounce Back From Tough Friday Loss Rebound With 65-58 Defeat / Of Libertyville Saturday By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry High Warriors bounced back from a tough loss to Crown on Friday night, tame the Libertyville Wildcats in Libertyville 65 to 58 at the Cat gym in Libertyville on Saturday night. It seemed like old times in the North Suburban, when the Warriors and Wildcats put on a struggle, the officials let the boys play, and it got rough at times, and Ken Ludwig beat his old rival Larry Leon on the court another time. Both teams started play, as if the game were being played outside, as they were as cold as the weather during th^ first period. The Cats outscored the 'Warriors 10 to 6 in the first eight minutes of play. Action picked up in the second period, when Johnson, Thomas and the Zeller boys began to hit the basket, yet the Warriors trailed at the intermission 26 to 23. It was during the first four minutes of the third period that the Warriors won the game. Lenny Jensen, Tony Sroka, the Warriors two fine guards, along with Brett Thomas, led a barrage on the basket that netted the Warriors 12 unan swered points and a nine point bulge 35 to 26. A full court press that completely rattled the Cats, and their poor shooting led to their downfall in the early going of the period. At one time the taller Cats missed seven tip in shots in a row. The Warriots led 44 to 37 at the close of the third quarter. In the final eight minutes both teams scored 21 points and the Warriors hung on to their seven point lead to win easily 65 to 58. It has to be a big win for the Warriors. After losing a close one Friday night, to come back and beat a team from the North Suburban is a plus factor. The Cats have begun to make waves in the North Suburban, as they are breathing down the necks of lead leading North Chicago. Next Friday night Gary Collins will bring his Gator squad to McHenry. It would be nice to see a large crowd on hand to welcome back Gary and his team. McHenry vs. Libertyville McHENRY fg ft pf tp T. After trailing by fourteen points at the intermission, the Warriors rallied but just fell short, and lost a close encounter to the Crown Viking 69 to 65. When Tony Sroka hit a fifteen footer with 1.25 to play to bring the Warriors within one, the loyal followers were on their feet anticipating an upset, but then several miscues in the closing minute left them on the short end of a 69 to 65 score. In the opening period the Warriors managed to maintain a consistent attack, and were tied with 1:30 remaining 16 all, when the Vikes rang up two quick baskets to grab a 20 to 16 lead. It was then that disaster struck the Warriors. The Vikings usins their super center Gary Gilseman to the utmost, and with a trapping defense spurted out .to a commanding 39 to 38 halftime lead. Gilesman had 5 of his 15 baskets this period. The Warriors came out of the dressing room with fire in their eyes, and with senior forward Brett Thomas leading the way began to peck away at the Viking lead. Thomas's free throw with 40 seconds remaining brought the score 50 mStf m to 47 Vike's, and Gilesman basket with seconds remaining had the Vikings in front 52 to 47. The final period was a barn burner, the Vikings could not pull away from the Warriors, and they gradually crept up to within one at 1:25, but then turnovers, and charity tosses gave the Vikings the win, and still in first place in the Fox Valley. It was a super effort on the part of the Warriors. They never quit, even when trailing'* by 11 at the intermission. They' gave it all they had and then some, but the more ex perienced and talented Vikings came out the winner, and you have to give them credit. They had the poise when it was needed, and that is the mark of a good team. McHenry vs. Crown McHENRY fg ft tp T. Zeller 2 1 5 Thomas 8 0 16 Johnson 10 2 22 Jensen 5 0 10 Sroka 3 0 6 B. Kies had spent four years as head basketball coach at Beloit Catholic before coming to Johnsburg this year. His 1976 team won the Wisconsin State Championship for Class "B" independent schools. Earlier in the season the Skyhawks defeated the J* Crusaders by a wide margin. They won again Friday, but with a little more trouble 72-59. All season Kies has been working for a balanced of fensive attack. In Friday's game five players scored in the double figures, but at the same time the team posted its worst shooting percentage of the season. The Skyhawks hit 41 percent from the field and kept having comfortable 8-10 leads dwindled to 2-3 points. Scott Dixon and Tom Schoenig were high point men for the Skyhawks with 16 points each. Schoenig hit six for nine field goals and four for seven free throws. Johnsburg is now 14-4 for the season and 5-2 in the Shark Conference. The Skyhawks are in second place, a game behind Marengo. Tuesday the Skyhawks were scheduled to travel to Jacobs and Saturday they host South Beloit.^? VARSITY JOHNSBURG fg ft tP S. Dixon 6 4 16 C. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Wrestling Warriors Squeezed Out By Crystal Lake Central Team 3rf f, In their last conference dual meet of the season, the McHenry varsity wrestlers lost to the Tigers of Crystal Lake Central by one point. The match that had been rescheduled twice this season because of hazardous wintry roads was a lopsided 23-3 in favor of the Tigers after the first six weight classes. Two Tiger forfeits and three Warriors wins helped McHenry move up to within one point of Crystal Lake. The McHenry freshman- sophomore team scored a 39-32 victory over the Tiger team. Warrior winners in the Frosh- Soph match were Eric Kar- pinski (90) by a decision and Scott Schmitt (112) and Dan Clark (132) by falls. Winners of exhibition matches were Mike Connors (126), Tom Ketchum (167), Scott Reitz (126) and Mike Boro (UL) by falls. Dave Cermack (132) tied his exhibition match, 9-9. Not attending as a reporter, I didn't write down the name nor do I remember, but it isn't easy to forget the speaker at the annual dinner meeting of the McHenry Hospital held Saturday night. He was a good one. That he was. f; Dr. Somebody teaches at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and one can well imagine students clambering to enroll in his classes. Our fine speaker gave the gals a few words about taking care of their husbands, pointing out that widows in this country outnumber widowers 8 to 1. Of course, the good doctor had many amusing things to say, but the admonition to the gals is the one I brought home for use from time to time. President LeRoy Olsen of the hospital Board, an outstanding leader, mentioned that it was the first meeting he could remember of being held without former President George P. Freund being present. George was the backbone of the organization for many years, but couldn't attend this time. You may be sure his heart was with the group. Those poor New York Yankees. They are going to have to limp along without the big bat of Rod Carew. Carew left Minnesota for the California Angels where the gold rush is still in full swing. Baseball fans give no in dication of not paying the freight tg. see those stars perform, then seeing them live happily ever after. Everybody seems to be happy. Have talked to basketball fans who get no kick out of seeing those giant players dunking a ball through the nets. It is too much like shooting fish in a barrel. The names of the game brings out my annual blurb about fouling out. Many fouls are merely slaps on the wrist and, if the other players is in the act of shooting, free throws are awarded. Isn't that enough? What other game has such a rule? Kick a players out for a dirty foul. Give the fans their moneys worth and let them see the best lineups battle in a close finish. That's my idea of the absurd foul rule - and I'm sticking to it. Somebody asked my views on technical fouls. They can be overdone, but will have to stay. Without them, coaches and players would take the rules of the game right out of the hands of the officials. Our friends know how to time their postcards. Now comes one from Mil and Don Hayes from Hawaii with the notation: "Biff said to be sure and let you know about the lack of snow here. Beautiful weather so far." That's nice. > Good ol' Biff! Jim Larkin spent Sunday making out orders for garden seeds. Looks like his wife will get out in the sun next summer. The spread printed about the "The Winter of '36" drew a lot of comment as some compared the snows of '36 to '79. Larry Huck brought those pictures to us, thinking we might use one of them. When our dear editor saw them, she gobbled them up as a real features. Sophs Beat Crown In Overtime; Lose To Libertyville Cagers f€ M0N-FRI 5 to 7 P.M. After a two week lay off due to snow and winds, we ambled into the alleys and tried to get back into the swing of things...some did and some sure didn't. Five men did an outstanding job, so they were oblivious to the lay-off. R. Homo rolled a high game of 213 and a series of 496, J. Lescher had 197 and 516, R. Justen had 181 and 488, B. Bitterman (he-type) had 176 and 501, and A. Boeldt had 172 and 487. Back in stride after a dry spell was B. Thompson who "racked" up a 173 and a 494, while E. Rogers rolled 167 and totaled 485. Saw a lot of splits rolled (I had more than my share), but none were picked up...an off week again; there were, also, no free drinks given, so we know how the strikes were running. Only two people raised their averages: Sub., B. Bit terman + 12 pins and B. Thompson, +2 pins. THE EASYS will be munching pizza next week and I always enjoy ^when they win. On to the standings: Farrell's Follies The Strugglers Scoring seven points in the overtime period the McHenry High sophomores defeated Crown 61 to 58 last Friday night. The young Warriors led 44 to 40 going into the final period, but the Crown sophs managed to tie the game in the closing seconds. In theovertime Bob Greve's 4 points, Bob Kalck's 2 and a free throw by Sean Haley gave the Warriors the win. Greve led all scorers with 26 points. LOST TO LIBERTYVILLE On Saturday night the Libertyville sophomores led all the way to defeat the Warriors 59 to 50. Bob Greve and Mark Schiller each with 16 points led the Warrior attack.
