TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 7, 1969) Close to 150 staunch Republicans gathered to select the men they want to represent them in the township election this spring. Elected by unanimous voice vote were Thomas Birmingham of Eastwood Manor for assistant supervisor, Albert Adams of Johnsburg for township clerk and Lewis Belshaw of Wonder Lake for assessor. The only contest came when nominations were asked for the three positions of auditor. James Wegener of McHenry topped the list in secret voting with 84 votes, followed' by Connie Johnson of Lilymoor with 81 and William Martinec of Pistakee Highlands wiUi 68. VILLAGE BUSINESS "Editor: "A special meeting of the McHenry Shores village board was called for Monday, Jan. 29, for the sole purpose of buying a new truck for the village. Our snow plow truck does need some repair and it was decided that a replacement should be made in the near future. "The usual procedure for buying new equipment for the village is for the village to make specifications and drainage problem through Lakeland Park by authorizing an expenditure estimated not to exceed $2,000 for preliminary engineering. Drainage from 111. Route 120 and*adjacent areas flows through the open ditch in Lakeland Park. With sanitary sewer construction and road improvements planned, it has been determined that proper drainage must be provided. publish this in the paper so that all interested parties are able to bid on that item, thus allowing the village to save money by choosing the best (lowest) bid. This normal, official procedure was not followed in the purchase of the new $18,000. truck for the village. If you'had attended the meeting, you would have been amazed at the procedure the board did follow "Most of the board members felt that there was an emergency, and that the old truck had to be replaced im mediately by a new and finer truck, (Trustees Grimes and Weiler personally took it upon themselves to solve the problem.) They found a truck in Crystal Lake which they felt would fit the needs of the village. While Trustees Grimes, Koleno, Weiler and Weincouff supported the im mediate purchase of this truck, Trustee LaFrancis and President Lillegard questioned the absence of other dealers being able to bid on the new truck. "The answer they received was that an emergency existed. True, the village plow truck had been disabled with a bad clutch; however, through the diligence of President Lillegard, other snow plow equipment was secured to fill the void, and, therefore, no emergency existed. This still did not halt the decision of those trustees who proposed the purchase of the new truck. We will never know if money could „ have been saved on such a purchase if the usual channels had been followed. "Does the village have ample funds to acquire such an ex pensive truck? Isn't this the most expensive item that the village has ever purchased? Is there a possible tax increase as a result of this large purchase? Your new truck was purchased solely on the decisions of Trustees Grimes, Weiler, Koleno and Weincouff. "Attend the next board meeting, Feb. 7, and these four men will surely be able to respond to these questions and any other questions regarding your tax dollar.
