PAGE « - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1979 ipm> Warriors Win Bob Zeller's Basket Beats C.L. Central 53-52 ain By Dick Rabbitt Bobby Zeller's 18 footer with five seconds remaining enabled the McHenry Warriors to defeat the Crystal Lake Tigers 53 to 52. Only seconds before, Tom Pence of the Tigers made two charity tosses to put the Tigers in the lead 52 to 51. After a Warrior time out, the stage was set for Zeller's heroics, and the young lad came through in fine style. The first period was a fast setting pace with each team exchanging baskets throughout the first eight minutes with the Tigers leading 20 to 19. In the early going of the second period the Tigers pulled away to a 27 to 20 margin, before the Warriors crept back into the ball game. With Jen sen, Thomas and the two Zellers all picking up points the Warriors only trailed 33 to 30 at the intermission. A repeat of Saturday's performance at^Libertyville took place in the third quarter. The Warriors rang up eleven unanswered points to grab a 38 to 33 lead, and after Pence's basket, put another seven on the score board to lead going into the final period 43 to 35. Midway in the final period the Warriors had jumped out to a somewhat comfortable 47 to 38 lead, when they became careless with ball handling and poor shooting, and the Tigers began to get back into the ball game. With 48 seconds remaining Thomas made two free throws to put the Warriors ahead by 3 - 51 to 48, and that set the stage for the final seconds that1 enabled the Warriors to come out in the victory column. The Warriors had balanced scoring, with four players in double figures, led by Brett Thomas with 11 points. McHENRY fg ft pf tP T. The senior forward scored ten points in the game, one of four Warriors in double figures in the balanced scoring attack. It was Zeller's sophomore borther Bob, who sank an 18-foot Jump shot with 5 seconds left on the clock which gave the Warriors the victory. Brett Thomas led the Warriors in scoring with eleven points, while both Zellers and Tony Sroka chipped in with ten each. Pence paced the Tigers with 16 points. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Coach Pam Schaefer's McHenry High girls' basketball team won their third straight Fox Valley Conference game last Saturday when they avenged an earlier defeat by Jacobs by winning 50 to 36. After a close first period with the Warriors leading 12 to 11, the local girls completely dominated play the rest of the game winning easilv 50 to 36. Sue Hutchinson led the local scoring with 14 pts. followed by Annette Dercole with 13. The girls at present time are 9 and 5 for the season and 3 and 3 in the Fox Valley . The 10 points scored by Sharon Smith of the Warriors during the contest moved her into seventh place among scoring leaders in the Fox Valley conference. Somebody thought Howie Judson played with the Hebron Green Giants when they won the state basketball cham pionship in 1952. It was Howie's twin brothers Phil and Paul, who played on that team. There has to be room for improvement in the selection of baseball players for the Hall of Fame, When Enos "Country" Slaughter doesn't get enough votes to enter the great hall, somebody had better look at the records. Many sports writers in the voting clan fere not old enough to remember the great ones. Of course, they never saw the likes o' Enos Slaughter play ball. That isjyhy they should take a long, hard look at the records. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Jacobs Dumps Skyhawks Scott Dixon Nets 22 In 5<%£5 Loss By Randy Swikle Heroes are not the exclusive property of victory. Sometimes they emerge from defeat, characterized by gallent effort and spectacular performance.. Scott Dixon was a hero of sorts despite the fact that his Johnsburg team lost to Jacobs High School 56 to 55 Tuesday night. The senior Skyhawk guard made 10 of 15 field goal at tempts, scored 22 points, had nine assists, nabbed four rebounds, and played a fine defensive game. It was a well- rounded performance from a highly talented athlete. Don Bentz, 6'4" center for the Skyhawks, also put forth a commendable performance. He scored 17 points and con trolled the defensive boards. But when the final buzzer sounded, the Skyhawks were on the short end of things. And it was primarily due to six tur novers in the third quarter. Although the Golden Eagles held the edge at the end of each quarter, the lead fluctuated throughout most of the game. But in the third quarter the Johnsburg effort was stymied by six turnovers that provided the opportunity for Jacobs to secure a 10 point lead. Jacobs hit 10 of 14 field goals in the third quarter and the Skyhawks hit 7 of 8. It was a turning point of the game. Jacobs went into a stall at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but baskets by Dixon and Bentz narrowed the opponent'sjfead to four points. The Skyhawks went into a full court press, and Dixon broke up the Jacobs offense three con secutive times with pass in terceptions and deflections. With 2:27 remaining a Bentz score brought the Skyhawks within two points, 50-48, of the Golden Eagles. A Jacobs player was fouled on a successful drive to the basket and increased the lead to five points. Another Bentz basket with two minutes remaining narrowed the Jacobs lead to three points. With seven seconds remaining in the game, Scott Dixon was fouled as he scored a basket. His extra free throw was good and brought the score to 55-53. Mike Hudson was fouled by Bentz to stop the clock at five seconds. Hudson made one of the two free throw^ to give the Eagles a more comfortable three-point lead. Dixon scored the final basket on a last second drive to the basket, not drawing a foul he hoped for. Johnsburg is now 14-5 for the season and in second place in the Shark Conference. The Skyhawks host South Beloit Saturday and travel to North Boone on Wednesday. JOHNSBURG fg ft pf tP S. Dixon 10 2 4 22 C.
