A Guiness sports record book from Ron Bykowski has given me a lot of pleasure. That book has everything from baseball to the fastest gun in the west. • Eleanor Miller wanted to know how many blue jays we had in our back forty so we answered "two". Right away she said she has four. (I should have built up the figure). Something to remember; It's not what we say But how we say it. It's not what we do But how we do it. Wonder how they get those TV ratings. Do they call anybody out here in the boondocks? The lady was saying: Remember back when you could address a letter to McHenry or West McHenry -- no street number and no zip code ~ and it would be delivered? Before delivery in the city, everybody went to the Post Office to pick up mail. A letter from "Somewhere In Florida" was signed "A Nor thern Snowbird from , McHenry". Of course, the letter told us how they have to head for the shade it is so hot down there.' And, hear this! A small envelope contained some green grass -- just to remind us what grass looks like. Also, some Lawrence Welk clippings were enclosed in which some fans were stirred up about dancer Cissy King being fired. Poor ol' Lawrence took his lumps in that article. An effective Skyhawk defense held the Sobos to only two points in the fourth quarter, but the Johnsburg team couldn't put together an offense of its own as the game went into Overtime with a score of 36-36. V There "ain't" no justice! Bought a box of cigars and found the price has gone up since a month ago. 'Twould seem they should freeze the price on such necessities of life. Each year when baseball opens its door for Hall of Fame greats, the ommission of Hack Wilson, pudgy Chicago Cub center fielder, hits the fan. * Old Timers and some not so darned old will remember the record of 56 homeruns and 190 runs batted in by Hack back in the year 1930. It seems there should be some category for such accomplishments. There is an oft told story of Riggs "Old Hoss" Stephenson, the team's most dependable hitter. Riggs batted fifth, right behind Wilson. When asked why his RBI total was so meager, Riggs would answer, "There was never anybody on base after Hack batted". Somebody out California way must be happy. Their UCLA basketball team knocked off No. 1 Notre Dame and probably knocked the Irish off their top perch in the ratings. Almost forgot that Valen tine's Day is near until one of the nicest greetings that ever came my way appeared on my desk. Kind remembrances came from Anne (Sullivan) Sowers who never forgets that I used to call her Lollipop when she was a high school classmate of our daughter Trisha. Now there's a card that will never get away from me. Sentimental? You bet I am. SCORE BY QUARTERS: Johnsburg 13 17 28 36 ot: 38 South Beloit 10 24 34^36 ot: 42 By Randy Swikle The name of the tune was "Victory". The crowd provided the chorus and a group of Skyhawk cagers provided the rhythm. Twenty seconds into John- sburg's 70-58 victory over South Beloit, Scott Dixon provided the first music: the "swish" sound of a 20-foot jump shot followed by the deafening roar of an enthusiastic Johnsburg cheering section. "No-D!... No-D!... No-D!...", they chanted in reference to the talented senior guard. And it was "No-D" again from 20 feet just a few seconds later. Then Donny Bentz picked up the melody from 12 feet. And then Schoenig. And Christy, And Dixon again. The Skyhawks scored on each of their first six field goal at tempts, and after a brief in terlude the beat continued with some additional drummers. It was Bentz, Pecucci, Bentz, Zimbrick, Schoenig, and Valentin contributing more points to the Johsburg side of the 23-10 first quarter score. For Johnsburg coach Bob Kies and many ardent Skyhawk fans, the entire first half marked a reaffirmation of the team's potential. Lately, Kies has felt that his players were not functioning as the cohesive unit that characterized their performance during the first half of the season. He was worried about the number of forced shots, turnovers, and other factors which impaired effective teamwork. The halftime score of 40-26 gave the Skyhawks a com fortable 14-point lead, and the SoBos never came any closer than 11 points. Four Johnsbut-g cagers scored in the double figures. Balanced scoring has been a part of Kies' basic offensive strategy. Scott Dixon lead the Skyhawks with 15 points. Brett Zimbrick, 5'il" guard with a greal deal of potential, scored 12 points. Bentz pumped in 11, several below his average, and Tom Schoenig scored 10 points. The Skyhawks complete their regular season schedule hosting North Boone on Friday, Feb. 23. Between now and then, the Johnsburg team faces a very tough agenda. Tuesday the Skyhawks were scheduled for a make-up game at North Boone. The Vikings have shown considerable improvement during the season and were expected to give the Skyhawks a tough time. On Friday the Johnsburg club travels to Harvard. The Skyhawks defeated the Hornets 73-55 earlier in the season, but Harvard too has shown progress. The Hornets recenlty upset Marengo, which has held the top position in the Shark Conference throughout the season. Next Tuesday Johnsburg hosts Marengo in another make-up contest. On the Marengo court, the Indians defeated the Skyhawks 62-59. If Johnsburg is successful against North t Boone and Harvard, a victory against Marengo would make the Skyhawks conference cham pions. Center Jim Johnson, shown above scoring two of his team-leading 16 points, reportedly sustained a broken ankle and is lost to the team for the remainder of the season. During the game, the Warriors enjoyed a 36-35 halftime lead against Crystal Like South, before the Gators rallied in the third and fourth quarters to down the locals 72-57. The win dropped McHenry into fifth place in the Fox Valley conference, while South moved into first place. Haderly, also a fourth seed, beat Hoffman of Mundelein Carmel 10-4 and then Cancelli of Mundelein 6-5 to reach the finals. Scott Hoy of Wauconda pinned Haderly in the second period during the championship match and then third place Laroi stole that second place standing with a first period quick pin. Haderly finished the district tour nament with a thrid place medal and 5-11 record. Two McHenry wrestlers finished in fourth place at the district tournament. Dave Ramer, seeded third in the 145 pound class, pinned his Lake Forest opponent in 3:30, lost to Hay of Mundelein 6-2, won his wrestleback on a forfeit and lost the consolation match to Gernhardt of Libertyville 6-2.
