Now is the time to begin gathering the records you'll need in completing your income tax return, expecially if you plan to itemize deductions. Following Schedule A of form 1040, sort all records from 1978 which pertain to deductions into the categories listed on the form. By beginning now, you still have time to request copies of state ments or bills from the bank or other sources if original copies have been lost. If you sold capital assets last year, such as stocks and real property, you should locate the records indicating the price and date of sale. Don't forget to include energy-saving credits to which you might be entitled. If you moved, gather records of the ex pense. And if you're over 65 and sold your home, find these records too.
