S.B.A. Sets April Deadline On Disaster Loan Petitions Twice Told Tales An April 2 deadline has been set for the atceptance of physical disaster loan ap­ plications by the Small Business Administration from victims of Blizzard "79", an SBA official announced today. "At the present time, this deadline must be considered firm," said John L. Smith, Illinois district director of SBA. "I would encourage all affected persons to act by that time." Forty-one Illinois counties Feb. 1 were declared a physical disaster area by A. Vernon Weaver, SBA administrator. Weaver's action, which also covers areas adjacent to the forty-one counties, , enables home owners and tenants, business people and farmers, churches, private schools, and other non-profit organizations in the affected areas to qualify for low-cost, long-term SBA loans to restore or replace damaged property not covered by insurance. Smith said a Nov. 1 deadline has been set in connection with the Economic Injury provisions of this declaration. Smith said information about all SBA disaster programming may be obtained throughout Illinois by calling the toll free telephone, 800-972-3177. Through this number, he added, arrangements may be made for speakers from SBA to explain disaster programming to community groups. Smith explained that the physical declaration covers non-insured damages incurred by residences and all businesses. In connection with residential losses, Smith §aid, affected persons may qualify for loans up to $50,000 for real property, of up to $10,000 for personal property, and of up to $55,000 for a combination of real and personal property. Legislation sets an interest rate of 7% percent in con­ nection with SBA disaster loans, Smith said. He added that disaster loans may be made for periods of up to 30 years. According to Smith, the borrower must present a bona fide estimate of loss following which a verification of loss will be made by SBA before final action is taken on the ap­ plication.
