Box 20S * Crystal Lake I l l ino is 60014 * (815; 459-2441 by Estelle Atwell i Senior Hot Line J <t» 9 Foster home chairman, Patti Cane, is always looking for families willing to give temporary care to our many young pups and kittens. This spring will once again bring about our problem of "raining cats and dogs". Please call Patti if you would like to learn more about our program which helps find homes for such darling pets as the kitten pictured. 459-9523. Photo Credit: Don Kaiser By Estelle Atwell Pets need people - for care and food. It has been found that this is one of the reasons pets ^are a valuable aid in working with retarded children. The retarded, always dependent on others, find animals the one living thing that needs them for care and food. Once a child sees this it is a great morale booster. Introducing animals to the situation brings an awareness to some of the children who have been taught to do simple things like turn on b faucet or polish a utensil or learn a task on a crafts project that the pet cannot perform any of these things, and that they have abilities the pet does not have. It does wonders for the self-esteem of those always Striving to reach the greater ability levels of normal children. ! In an article from a publication of the National Association for the Ad vancement of Humane Education, author Caren L. Marcus says: "Although animals fill different needs, the overall appeal is their non- threatening nature. For the disturbed child who often braves affection, yet is fearful Df rejection, a warm loyal dog will always accept endless hugs and fondling, and anxiously return with moist licks and gagging tail. For the physically handicapped a pet is not only a comfort during painful times, but also the Incentive to continue physical therapy. A spastic little girl, I ?or example, refused to use her ;legs because she would often •fall and hurt herself. Once '.given a lively puppy, she followed it from room to room, ^tumbling, crawling, and oc casionally walking". \ At Iowa State Psychopathic .liospital in Iowa City, Flicka, •an English Sheep dog, plays Iwith child patients. "Because ^Flicka gives unconditional love, the staff finds that children unable to com- imunicate with humans, relate >ell to the dog. Whether they Ihrow snow balls at her and 4hen smother her with hugs, she !never rejects them. According .to Sue Schlienz, clincial nur sing specialist on the ward, '"the children feel Flicka is Something living that un derstands them. The kids will •tell the dog things they won't •tell anyone else. The fact that 'they are verbalizing is im portant since they have dif ficulty doing it' with adults ^because they don't trust them. TThey know the dog will never Teveal secrets or tattle on them or lie to them. And if the dog idoesn't like you, it will let you :know. Dogs are about as honest ;as kids, and kids can ap preciate that she explained," Fee for all dog adoptions includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery performed by a vet of our choice or a deduction from the cost of the surgery from a vet of your choice. Dixon) Secretary of State Driving at night is always more difficult than during the day. It is harder to see and things appear differently. The glare of oncoming headlights increases the difficulty. Un familiar roads and unexpected situations are more likely to cause trouble. You can help ensure safe driving at night in several ways: 1. Make sure your headlights are working well and the glass is kept clean. Have them checked periodically for correct aim. 2. Don't overdrive your headlights. At night, you should be able to stop within the distance you can see ahead with your lights. 3. Dim your headlights for every approaching vehicle from the opposite direction, and when closely following any vehicle. 4. Slow down when meeting another vehicle or when nearing a curve if you are driving at or near the maximum posted speed. 5. Use the edgeline as a guide. If there is no edgeline, use the center line to guide yourself. (A copy of the Rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Alan J.
