FEBRUARY 28, 1979 Skyhawks Coast In Regional Opener by Randy Swikle The Johnsburg Skyhawks coasted to an easy 82-70 win over Ida Crown of Chicago in the first game of the Harvard Regional Monday night. Ida Crown never held the lead as the Skyhawks skyrocketed to a 38-25 halftime break. In the third quarter the Skyhawks increased their margin over Ida Crown to a 20- point lead, and Ida Crown (which finished the season with a 12-9 record) showed no signs of being capable of stopping the Skyhawk surge. Five players for Johnsburg scored in double figures. Junior guard Brett Zimbrick came off the bench to lead his team in scoring with 15 points. Zim­ brick hit 78 percent from the field and made his only free throw attempt. The Dixon brothers, Scott and Chris, each netted 13 points and together pumped in eight of nine from the free throw line. Forward Lenny Pecucci scored 12 points and center Don Bentz contributed 11 to Johnsburg's victory. The game lacked the fevered excitement of Johnsburg's recent contests and one Skyhawk fan was actually seen yawning. But a very easy win may be good therapy for the Johnsburg squad. It has given the team a chance to unwind a bit after some very close and highly emotional games the Skyhawks played on their way to winning the Shark conference cham­ pionship. Tonight, Johnsburg faces Marian Central of Woodstock in a game beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Harvard gymnasium. Marian, which has a current season record of 8-14, rolled over Lake Forest Academy Monday night, 81-65, to advance to the semi-finals of the Regional. "I expect Marian to give us a lot of trouble," said Skyhawk coach Bob Kies. "They may be our most difficult opponent in this Regional." They defeated Cary-Grove 56 to 46, and lost to Dundee 57 to 44 and to Woodstock 52 to 51. Sharon Smith with 19 points led the local girls in the Cary- Grove game, while Sue Hut­ chinson led the team in scoring in the other two. Sue had 12 against Dundee, and 14 in the Totals: losing cause to Woodstock. Tomorrow night at 4:30 the girls will host Cary-Grove and next week will close out the season at Crystal Lake Central. Montini needed miracle "last-second", heroics to ad­ vance to the Final Four of the Diocesan Tournament of Champions. In the opening round of the Northeast Sectional, Montini faced St. Joseph of Elgin. The Mustangs battled from an 11 point deficit in the 3rd quarter to force a tie at the end of regulation play. Jim Leon, the Montini Sharpshooter, drove the length of the court and sank a 20 foot jump shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. The lead exchanged hands throughout the first overtime which also ended in a tie. Montini edged St. Joe's in the second overtime for a 52 to 48 victory. Montini preserved the win with a length of the court pass from Bill Herrmann to Ed Kennedy in the final seconds of the second extra period. Jim Leon led the victors with 25 points and Bill Herrmann scored 14 points. Mark Thompson added 7 points for the Mustangs. In the sectional final Montini was matched against St. Patrick of St. Charles, Illinois. The Mustangs rallied in the final minutes to defeat St. Pats by a score of 35 to 34 The game was a very hard fought contest with the lead continuously changing hands. With 18 seconds remaining in the game and Montini trailing by a point, Mark Thompson converted two free throws to move the Mustangs back into the lead. St Pats regained the lead with a basket with four seconds left in the game. Montini called time to reorganize its offensive attack. • Jim Leon was fouled on the inbounds pass and went to the free throw line to shoot a one on one. Despite the pressure the crowd distractions, Leon responaed with both free throws to give Montini a one point victory. Both teams played tough pressing defenses. Ed Kennedy and Tim Truckenbrod excelled in both the „ defensive and rebounding departments for the champions. ^ ""j? Bill HerrmannTmished wtih 13 points, while Mark Thomp­ son added 12 points. It was indeed a real comeback for the young Trojans in the game Friday night. Trialing 20 to 7 in the early stages of the second period, the winless Trojans began to hit the bucket and trailed by one at the in­ termission 24 to 23.
