The first week in January, the Plaindealer checked the price of 50 food and non-food items which are commonly purchased. Hie prices were checked at the three largest grocery stores in the city. The prices were averaged and recorded. The first week in February the process was repeated and again this month the survey was done. In January, if a shopper had purchased one of each item (one lb. of items sold by the lb.), the list would have cost $62.08. March 1, the same items would have cost $65.44, an increase of 5.5 percent. February 1, the items cost $64.32. The increase in the last month is approximately 1.74 percent. Heading the list of increases is produce, where prices have jumped 16.3 percent already this year. Meat prices show the next sizeable gain, up 12.5 percent. Milk products are down .7 percent, although they increased 1.4 percent this month. Of the fifty items in the survey, thirty-four have increased in price since Jan. 1, while 9 have gone done in price and the average selling price of seven items has remained the same. The biggest single price increase was in the price of cabbage. January 1, cabbage was 23 cents per lb. Two months later, the price had jumped 143.5 percent to 56 cents. A head of lettuce had a substantial price increase, rising 53.2 percent from 62 cents a head to 95 cents a head. The largest decrease found was in the price of a pound of vine-ripened tomatoes. In two months, the average price had dropped from 76 cents per lb. to 52 cents, a decrease of 31.6 percent.
