The chanting had begun fifteen minutes before the game was scheduled to start and continued throughout the contest. And the Skyhawks. in par ticular Don Bentz, did just as they were asked. He had ten field goals and ten of eleven from the charity stripe. Junior Tom Schoenig added 19 points and Captain Scott Dixon scored 13 to help pace the victors "We defensed the daylights out of them," Coach Bob Kies commented after the game. It was the second time this year the Skyhawks had downed Marengo in three games. In the first meeting of the yeat\ Marengo won at home by three points and later in the season Johnsburg won a game at home by 3 points Johnsburg won the Shark conference and Marengo finished second. "We decoyed them into thinking we were playing a zone." Kies continued after the game, "but it was a man to man And. it had them con fused We forced them outside and didn't let them do what they wanted to do." "Our man to man has been our bread and butter all year," the beaming coach explained. "The kids believe in it and I believe in it." In the first quarter. John sburg jumped on top on a nice, basleine drive by Scott Dixon. The Skyhawks were never behind the remainder of the game At the end of the first period, Johnsburg was up by four points at 14-10, as Bentz had started out what later proved to be a fantastic night by scoring six points Schoenig had two baskets In the second quarter, Marengo narrowed the gap as Kay Bauman. their top player and an honorable mention all- state candidate had three field goals. For Johnsburg. Brett Zin- brick came off the bench to supply needed firepower as he has throughout the season. With Marengo in a zone Zimbrick came on to firefwo eighteen footers from the right baseline and added a fifteen footer to keep Johnsburg in front At the half. Johnsburg en joyed a slim, two-point lead at 29-27. Had the Skyhawks not had fifteen turnovers in the half, their lead could easily have been larger "We moved the ball well and executed well." Kies explained But then we tried to force it and that caused alot of our turnovers " "We got out easy for the break but then we tried to hurry it." he continued "At halftime. we talked about trying to get it under control." The halftime message struck home with the Skyhawks. After Marengo scored first to knot the score at 29-all, Johnsburg scored ten straight points and were never caught after that Scott Dixon drilled a swish from twenty feet; he followed with a swish from ten feet. Don Bentx rebounded a miss by Chris Dixon for an easy basket; Bentz made a free throw ; Scott Dixon made an excellent pass underneath the basket to Bentz who scored as he was fouled and made the free throw. The third quarter ended with Johnsburg enjoying a very comfortable 48-35 lead. In the fourth quarter John sburg kept up its torrid pace, increasing the lead to seven teen points at one time, 53-36. Chris Dixon, who had been scoreless until the final period, may have found out what the problem whas early in the quarter. On a trip down the floor, Dixon's shoe came off, and after throwing it toward the bench, he slipped and slided to the basket, took a pass from his brother Scott and scored his first two points of the game. From then on, the game turned into a run-and-gun ah fair. Marengo, in a drastic at tempt to narrow the gap, began hurrying up and down the floor, but could not outrun the Shark conference champs. Johnsburg refused to be outdone, and matched the Marengo charge. Bentz added six free throws and a pair of field goals to his total in the fourth quarter to lead his team. Both coaches cleared their benches at the game's end. with the Skyhawk players retiring to the bench to a well-deserved standing ovation from the nearly 500 Johnsburg fans in attendance at the game.
