Lily Lake Ladies Brave Weather To Socialize Again Wednesday evening, March 7, was the first meeting of the year of the Lily Lake Ladies league. Snow, sleet and mud may not deter our mail people, bat it did stop our ladies. The hostesses were theJ two Mildreds, Narcaroti and Nejedly. This was to have been a business meeting with the election of officers; but with only nine ladies present, it became an evening of fun and bunco. Connie O'Rourke won first prize, Helen Para second, hostess Mildred Nejedly third, and Joan Delatorre, booby. Next meeting will be a social night, so the election will probably be held the first Wednesday in April. Mem bership is open to ladies of our community. Lu Gravenstuk is publicity chairman, and she may be called at 385-6163. SAVE LILY LAKE PROGRESS Have you noticed the mounds of dirt on the west side of Lily Lake? Doug Alheit, in charge of heavy equipment with the Lily Lake Conservation club, is supervising the "moving of mountains", where the spoils from the lake will be pumped. He and his co-workers are producing every day, regar dless of snow, winds, rain or even sunshine. Jerry Weber and Dale Rasmussen, co-chairmen of the berm and dredging com mittees, had help last Satur day. Ralph Brindise and Tom Pierce were among the workers. Call Jerry at 344-1955 if you have a few hours to give on weekends to the revitalization of your lake. LAKEMOOR WRESTLING AWARDS Four "Most valuable" awards were given out at the McHenry high school wrestling awards banquet on Wednesday, March 7 at West campus. Two, or 50 percent, were awarded to two young men from Lakemoor. Mark Betancourt received the "Most Valuable <Junior Varsity Wrestler" trophy, and Scott Schmidt received the same recognition as freshman wrestler. Congratulations to Mark and Scott for adding to Lakemoor's laurels. GET WELL WISHES To Peggy Hendrickson on slipping forward off the stairs into the gravel; to Jackie Stromley, grand-mother-to-be; to Ken Tony an, worker with the L.L.C.C.I.; to Mike Hertel, Alma and Bud Hueckstaedt's son-in-law, who will be on crutches for another five weeks or so due to a broken leg; to Bucky Paroubek, who had 150 stitches in surgery. Happy that you are feeling better. QUILTING Louise Hipwell, our craft lady, has the squares cut out for the "Conservation Quilt" that she has originated for the benefit of the Lily Lake restoration. The squares are to be appliqued or embroidered in original designs made up by individuals wishing to be represented on the finished quilt. Each square is also to have the name of the person who designed it embroidered on it. When all squares are finished, an old fashioned "quilting bee" will be held to complete the quilt. It will then be auctioned off, with the proceeds to go to the lake restoration. The squares are available at the McHenry Nunda Library on Lily Lake road, or call Louise. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS March 16 marks Jason Sch midt's second birthday. Debbie Vornkahl is in her last pre-teen year, starting the seventeenth. Herman Albert Kunz cele brates his day March 20. Lu Gravenstuk and her family celebrate five birthdays in March. This helps to keep this dear lady busy with her favorite pasttime, crocheting. Currently, Lue and daughter Irene Thornton have each made a matching red afghan and pillow for one of the children. No wedding anniversaries noted this week. May everyone have a happy Irish day on Saturday. I was vvat- ching TV when Governor Carey of New York came on he screen He was delivering his state of the state message My attention was caught by a man in the corner of the screen ttho interpreting the Governor's address in sign language He fascinated me with his. smooth flowing movements After a little inquiry. I found out more about him His name is Keith Muller He's 28 and a clinical social worker whose specialty is working full time with the deaf It all began seven years ago through his association with a professor of educational psychology from Western Maryland college, who was a well-known authority on the deaf With this man's in spiration Mr. Muller began to specialize in caring for the deaf He then went on to develop his own skills at sign language to the point of becoming an expert in terpreter. I'm sure a lot of viewers like myself became aware of handicapped people who could view that same program because of Keith Muller and others like him. It helped me to remember all those people who need a special kind of caring simply to enjoy a TV tran smission. I thanked God for people like Keith Muller and the countless others who devote themselves in some way to help the handicapped. I thanked God for the teacher who inspired him, and for all the teachers who encourage young people to use their gifts and talents in serving others. The world is full of good people who are working quietly for those in need. We're for tunate to have them, because they make the lives of millions a little more comfortable. They contribute nobility to our civilization For a free copy of the Christopher News Notes "Creativity," send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to The Christophers, 12 E. 48th St., New York, NY 10017.
