A standing room only crowd filled the Oregon gymnasium Friday night, as the Johnsburg Skyhawks battled the host school in the Class A state sectional tournament championship game. Johnsburg fans filled over half the gym and began cheering long before the contest began. A banner indicating the Skyhawks would defeat the Oregon Hawks despite the height advantage enjoyed by the home team was displayed while both teams warmed up and was greeted by a tremendous ovation. However, the height advantage proved to much for the Skyhawks as they were defeated 74-50. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD The McHenry junior high eighth grade girls basketball team won the Fox Valley Ten conference this year with an undefeated 10-0 record. The team went on to win the league tournament at the end of the season On the year, the girls finished 13-0. The team, which was unselfish in their play, was led by Terri Blume with an average of 7.2 points per game. Other high scorers included Laura Franks and Robin Geiger at 6.7 The season began with an overtime win over Johnsburg, a team that had dominated the Trojans for several years. Reflecting on the first game, Coach Jeff Ford commented, "It probably gave the girls more confidence than they realized." As the season continued, the girls seemed to become more aware of their abilities and what they' could accomplish. The team won the remainder of their conference games and also defeated Antioch in a non- conference tilt. The final two games were possibly the toughest of the season for the girls. Their next to last game was against cross-town rival Parkland at Parkland The game was a fierce battle throughout, but the Trojans came out on top 17-16. The final game was against Crystal Lake North, which was tied for the conference lead with the Trojans. The game lived up to its advanced billing as the toughest game of the year for the girls during the first half. A very effective press in the second half confused North however, and the Trojan girls won easily 22-12. The Trojans then carried their unblemished record into the conference tournament at Hickory Hill. In the first game, McHenry won by one point 23-22 over Wauconda. The second round game pitted the Trojans against Cary. "The girls had beaten cary badly during the season,' commented Ford, "and were not emotionally ready for the game." * In spite of having a hard time getting up for the game, the Trojans pulled away near the game's end and won 25-18. The championship game matched McHenry with a vastly improved Lundahl junior high team from Crystal Lake The game seesawed through the first three quarters, but a sticky man to man defense won the game for McHenry in the fourth quarter. The final score was McHenry 37, Lundahl 28, and the championship was the Trojans'. Reflecting on the season, Ford said, "It was the determination of the girls to work hard We have no superstars." "We just had 13 girls that wanted to work hard to improve their game." "It was a dream team, that had girls who stayed after a long practice to do even more practicing." %•••••••••••••••••••• j LAKE REGION j : YMCfl NEWS : YMCA GYMNASTIC TEAM The Lake Region YMCA's beginning compulsory gym- nasticaeam showed good im provement in their meet against Palatine Park District on Saturday, March 3.
