A variety of beneficial chaffees affecting income levels, tax credits, and so forth, may become available and require special attention. If you are uncertain as to how to proceed under these tfianges, you should get in touch with your local office of the Internal Revenue service or seek other expert advice as to how your tax situation will be affected. To acquaint you with some of the tax regulations affecting taxpayers 65 years or older, the Illinois State Bar association offers the following in formation. Who Must File Your income and your filing status are important in determining whether or not you must file a return. For those people 65 or older you must file a return for 1978 even when you owe no tax if you fall into the following categories: Single and your income was at least $3,700. Married filing a joint return and your income was at least $6,200 (if only one of you is 65 or (M4) DOUBLE BUBBLE NIGHTLY DURING NAPPY HOUR 2 DRINKS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE! 10% DISCOUNT TO SENIOR CITIZENS «u..im.i»(^Ic6Hen*V f,Inn Fan|ilv Iloqsc HOURS: O MON. You must also file even if your income is less than the amounts shown above if you owe any taxes, such as Social Security, on tips you did not report to your employer, tax on an IRA (individual retirement account), or minimum tax. However, even if you determine that you do not have to file to meet any of the above requirements, you may still want to file a return. You may want to file if you are eligible for a refund (if income tax was withheld from your^pay) or if you are eligible for the earned income credit available to some low income persons. Credit for the Elderly The law provides a tax credit for the elderly which may reduce or eliminate your taxes. You may be able to take this credit if you are over 65, or if you are under 65 but have retired under a public retirement system. For per sons over 65 the amount of the credit is determined by filling out schedule "R" which is included with your 1978 tax forms. If you meet the following criteria you may be eligible. If you are over 65 and are: Single or a qualifying widow(er), and received nontaxable pensions of less than $2,500 or your adjusted gross income is less than $12,500. Married, filing a joint return and received nontaxable pensions of less than $3,750 or your adjusted gross income is less than $17,500. (If one spouse is under 65, the amounts are $2,500<and $15,000).
