Not funded for cat care, they take in these strays on their own, and hopefully await an owner. Cat registration would provide the county with the funds to save more lives, by providing good quality care and provisions for a contractual adoption. On March 8, at the county court house in Woodstock, Helping Paws board members attended a meeting of the Health and Agriculture committee chaired by administrator Dr. J.V. Johnson. The purpose of this meeting, open to the public, was to discuss forthcoming "Proposed Article XVII Animal Control". Simply stated, this regulating article will have great impact on the citizens owning pets in McHenry county. An emergency meeting of our board was held March 7 to establish our attitudes and recommendations regarding the article. As the article under discussion is 24 pages long, typed on legal size paper, you can well imagine the task facing the committee. Nevertheless they want your input. Another meeting will be held March 29, at 9:30 in room 203 of the county court house building at 2200 North Seminary, Woodstock. The public is most anxiously in vited. Now is your time to speak. One very important subject to the owners of the 30,000 eats in our county, is that of cat registration. Helping Paws requests that you give this matter serious throught before finalizing your position. True it comes at a time when money is tight and the last thing we all need is another fee. This fee however will save lives and control problems experienced by Animal Control and HP. We stand behind the Animal Control 100 percent in the fight for this registration. One of our members has 8 cats and 4 dogs and little financial security to pay the food, vet and now registration and vaccination fees. However, she knows where that money collected from her will go, and even though a hardship, each and every animal is worth the sacrifice. She knows full well that monies collected do indeed go where they" will provide other cats and dogs less for tunate than hers with another chance at life. We ask you, too, to stand behind us. It is a fair and just cause. Helping Paws will be sub mitting its recommendations for implementation of cat registrations to Art Collins of the committee. He will receive this document within the week. Sue Newell of Bench Mark Labs brought to the attention of the committee the possibility of using tatoo registration on not only cats, but dogs as well. HP feels this was the most con structive suggestion emanating from the March meeting. Not only would this eliminate the use of a collar, but would guarantee permanent iden tification for the pet. If lost, it could never become a victim of the stray problem, nor be mistaken for one. Tatooing one's own social security number on the inside of the animal's leg is not a painful process. Details of such a program will be discussed at the March 29 meeting. Once again HP requests your support in this matter. If your are unable to come and would like to express your views and make them heard at the meeting, please send a letter stating your position and-or recommendations. These letters will be used to support our positions and-or dispute them. Send these letters to the Helping Paws office, 465 Virginia street (Route 14), Crystal Lake, 111., 60014.
