A rtists-ln-Residence Program Sets Deadline EDUCATIONAL } College Honors | frothy Book l< On Dean's Cist Cathy Boak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Boak of Johnsburg, has been named to the Dean's list at San Diego State university. This action recognizes academic achievements during the past semester which have placed her in the highest ten percent of all undergraduates who are majoring in disciplines in the college of Arts and Letters. March 31 is the deadline for applications from interested schools and community groups for the 1979-80 Artists-in- Residence program of the Illinois Arts council. The Artists-in-Residence program consists of residencies of professional visual artists, craftspeople, dancers, ar chitects, musicians, theatre artists and writers. The residencies last from one week to nine months. The artists serve as catalysts for creative activity and as artistic resources for the school and community, while spen ding half their time on their own work. Activities with school children, teachers, and community members include classes, workshops, lecture- demonstrations and per formances. With funding assistance from the Illinois Arts council and the National Endowment for the Arts, local costs are only from one-fourth to one-half of the total cost of each residency. Costs for participating schools and organizations range from $250 for a one-week writer's residency, to $4,000 for a nine- month period. Applications for the 1979-80 Artists-in-Residence program must show evidence of both community and school par ticipation in planning, im plementation and evaluation of the residency. Patrick's Day St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, died on March 17, 493. The anniversary of his death has been celebrated regularly in recent times, not only by Irishmen but by those of other races, and not only by Catholics but by those of other faiths. In fact, the New York organization in memory of St. Patrick, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, was organized by both Iri^h Catholics and Presbyterians, its first president was a Presbyterian. The most famous tale about St. Patrick is the one of his banishment of snakes from Ireland. Yet Cardinal Moran, who some years ago wrote an article on St. Patrick for the Catholic Encyclopedia, fails to mention it. He does mention the ordeal of St. Patrick when surrounded by demons and tells of the drowning of the demons in answer to his prayers. Whatever one's favorite tale, and there are many, people enjoy celebrating the anniversary of the death of St. Patrick this month. Irishmen, particularly, take pride in the occasion, and in the past have sometimes brought pieces of the "ould sod" from Ireland to observe the day.
