Men's 16-Inch Needs Team The McHenry Men's 16- Inch Softball league needs a new team to fill its eight team limit for the 1979 season. The league plays Tuesday and Thursday nights at the McHenry VFW and is rated as one of the finest softball leagues in the McHenry area. The league offers a 14- game schedule and a playoff round at the end of the season to determine the league champion. Anyone interested in finding out more about the league should contact the McHenry Plaindealer Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or call 385-6054. For the first time in the history of girls basketball at McHenry high school, the Warriors have a chance to win the regional championship. The local girls earned the chance Tuesday night, when they defeated Marian Central 63-59 in a semi-final game at Woodstock. The win places the girls in Thursday night's regional championship against the host school. The Blue Streaks defeated Marengo, 55-46 in Tuesday's second game. The Warrior girl's team, has never been in a regional championship. McHenry has played Woodstock twice during the year, winning by 28 points in the first meeting between the two teams and later dropping a one-point decision, McHenry will enter the championship with a 13-10 record, while Woodstock's mark stands at 10-11. The Warriors finished the season in sixth place in the Fox Valley conference with a 6-8 record. Woodstock was in seventh place at 5-9. Against Marian, the Warriors started out fast and built up an early lead, but needed two free throws by Sue Haddich with 12 seconds left to secure the victory. Sharon Smith led the winners with 22 points, while Sue Hutchinson added 11 and Haddich and Lisa Toole scored 8 each. Laura Vogt paced the Hurricanes with 18 points. "We played well for V/»- quarters," Coach Pam Shaffer said after the game. "After that, we made alot of mental errors and kept the game close." Sharon Smith scored eight points in the first quarter and Sue Hutchinson scored six, as McHenry roared to an 18-11 first period lead. In the second quarter, Smith scored eight more points and McHenry and Marian each netted eighteen points. At the half, McHenry was still on top by seven, at 36-29. "Sharon had 16 points at the half and was shooting and rebounding well," Shaffer commented. "She did try to force some things and it resulted in turnovers," she added. Last week, Smith was voted to the all-conference team. She was seventh in the league in scoring during the regular season. The scoring pace slowed in the third quarter, as the Warrior girls were held to eleven points. The McHenry defense also stiffened, holding Marian to ten points, to in crease their lead to eight points, 47-39, at the end of the quarter. In the fourth period, Marian ) 1 staged a comeback and with twelve seconds left, McHenry had a two-point lead, with Sue Haddick at the free throw line. Haddick converted both free throws to increase the lead to four. Marian hurried down the floor and scored an uncontested basket with four seconds left and fouled Colleen Byrne with one second left in the game. Byrne made both free throws and McHenry was in the finals with a 63-59 win; In the final period, McHenry made six of six from the foul line to seal the fate of the. Hurricanes. During the game, free throws kept Marian close, as they scored 18 points from the charity stripe, eight in the final period. Marian had eliminated Johnsburg Monday night to reach the semi-finals. "We've had trouble with free throws all vear." according to Shaffer. "But today, the girls came through when we needed to make them." "We have a better team than our record indicates," she continued. "All year long we've had a problem with playing down to the level of the team we're playing." She explained that the team had taken third place in the North Chicago Christmas tournament when the com petition was much tougher. Kies Named Coach Of The Year Johnsburg varsity basketball coach Bob Kies was named Shark conference coach of the year. The nomination was made after all coaches in the conference were polled. Kies led the first-year Skyhawks to a 23-6 record. His team won the Northern Illinois Classic at Christmas in Hampshire, the Shark conference, the Harvard regional and took second in the Oregon sectional. It was the fourth time Kies was awarded the honor in the five years he has coached in the conference. Prior to coming to Johnsburg. he coached at Beloit Catholic, another team in the conference. In 1977. he took the Crusaders to the Class B Wisconsin State championship. This year, the Skyhawks were one of 32 Class A teams left in the state playoffs, before bowing to Oregon 74-50. "The first time we played Woodstock this year," the coach explained, "we played extremely. well and they shot poorly and that's the reason for the 28-point spread. The second time, turnovers and missed free throws hampered our team and we lost 52-51." OitThe Sidelines s By Dick Robbitt ' Even though the local teams are out of it, basketball is still on the minds of many in the area. In Class AA it is the beginning of Sectional play. A little local interest will focus on Elgin, where former Warrior sophomore coach Gary Collins has his Crystal Lake Gators playing St. Charles. For the first time in several years there is no clear cut favorite for the title. Last year Lockport was the class of the state, but this year it seems that several are worthy of picking up the big trophy in Champaign on March 24th. Quincy the top rated team since January, still undefeated, has a tough row to get to the title. They first must get out of the Decatur sectional, then play the Chicago Public League winner. Second ranked St. Joseph's with Mr. Everything Isiac Thomas, should meet Proviso East in the Hindsdale final. This could be if they do meet the best game of the tournament. However, they must get by St. Patricks, who defeated them earlier in the season. St. Joe's hung' the only defeat on Proviso East in 27 games. Lockport is still another contender, along with Bloom of Chicago Heights another powerhouse. A couple of other contenders are Benet of the East Suburban Catholic Conference, which Marian Central is a member, and Rockford Auburn and Rockford East. The Chicago winner will be tough, and probably the only other downstate team to consider is Morton, which is located just outside Peoria. They are undefeated in 27 games. However, the way I pick winners, don't bet on any of the above, a darkhorse could slip through the door and surprise all of us. A couple of bouquets to be passed upon, Sharon Smith on her selection to the All Conference team in the Fox Valley. And to Jim "Whitey" Hall former swimmer for Mike Shanahan, who has qualified for the Nationals in Division II in the 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and a member of the 800 relay team at Eastern Illinois University. Quite an accomplishment for the freshman, and all Warrior fans are wishing him the best of luck. Living in the past is probably a favorite past time of many of us, so I would like to relive a moment that most of us enjoyed just three years ago. Yes it is the game between the Warriors and Rockford Guilford, when the Warriors won a close 59 to 58 decision and advanced to the Super Sectional at N.I.U. in DeKalb. Who can forget that night when the Warriors rallied from a seven point third period deficit and won a thriller. With 5,000 screaming fans in attendance the Warriors were not to be denied, with Koerber, Ludwig, Radar Reilly, Decker, Lund, Hurckes, Miller, Christy, Hertel giving it 100 percent. The Warriors jumped off to a quick 17 to 12 first period lead, but in the second period disaster struck as they missed numerous shots from in close. The third period was a little better, but not much as the Guilford five looked as if they were going to put the Warrior away for good. Then the brilliant fourth period, with Koerber and Decker sweeping the boards, Radar Reilly hitting six of seven all from fifteen feet or more. Tommy Ludwig coming back with his face bandaged, it took six stitches to close the gash after the game, to put on a ball handling performance. Decker's basket when he went over and through two Guilford defenders, and the clutch free throw by Koerber with 3,000 screaming Guilford fans taunting him. And who can forget when Larry Lund brought into the huge arena just before the end, a package of McHenry Plaindealers, and immediately after the final buzzer they were passed throughout the Warrior crowd, blazing headlines WARRIORS IN SWEET 16. The look on the Guilford fans was worth the trip to Rock Valley. Yes, it is nice to relive those glory days, and we hope that in the near future, history will repeat itself, and once again tfye Warriors will be in the SWEET 16.
