VV I PAGE <1 - PI AINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. MARCH >\. 1979 Keepin' Healthy According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, hundreds of Americans die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning. Since winter is the time of year when carbon monoxide poisoning is most likely to occur, here is a True or False quiz to test your knowledge of this potential killer: 1) Carbon monoxide has a "sweet" smell. T F 2) Carbon monoxide in the air may cause a bitter taste in your moth. T F 3) Carbon monoxide gas can leak into your car while you're driving. T F 4) Cooking on a charcoal grill inside a house, trailer, mobile home or other enclosed place can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. T F 5) An unvented gas kitchen range can produce deadly levels of carbon monoxide. T F 6) Carbon monoxide poisoning is always fatal. T F 7) Fuels which burn in completely cannot produce carbon monoxide. T F 8) A gas space heater can produce fatal amounts of carbon monoxide gas. T F 9) If you get stuck in the snow in your car, you should keep a window open at least an inch, and run the engine no more than 10-15 minutes each hour in order to prevent an ac cumulation of carbon monoxide. T F 10) Using a hibachi grill in an enclosed place probably will not cause carbon monoxide poisoning. T F Answers 1) False. Carbon monoxide has no odor at all. 2) False. It is also tasteless and cannot be seen. 3) True. It can leak in through the engine exhaust. 4) True. Burning charcoal releases high levels of carbon monoxide. 5) False. When used properly, a gas kitchen range does not represent a carbon monoxide hazard. 6) False. Although it can kill, it often causes dizziness, nausea and convulsions. *5 7) False. Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels burn in completely (as almost all fuels do to some extent). When a generous supply of fresh air is available, however, and the fuel is burning properly, there is little danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. 8) True. Any unvented fuel- burning appliance can produce potentially deadly levels of carbon monoxide. 9) True. Also, be sure to keep your exhaust free of an ac cumulation of snow so that it will not become clogged 10) False. It is just as hazardous in an enclosed place as is a standard charcoal grill. If you answered eight, nine or 10 of these questions correctly, you are aware of the causes of carbon monoxide poisoning and know how to prevent it. If you answered seven or less" correctly, It might be a good idea to re-read the questions better day to save at A P! n 3750 W. ELM ST. VALUES FOR GREATER SAVINGS IN EVERY AISLE OF YOUR A&P STORE! NETWT Economy Corner THOUGHT FOR FOOD By G0UID CBOOf Cheese Fondue Cheese is a nutritional food as it contains protein, fat and vitamins necessary to body re quirements. Eggs and cheese have proven to be good for us so we're doing ourselves a favor to combine the two for a filling dish without the costly pieces of meat. 1 pound grated Cheddar cheese 1 tablespoon flour 1 small bottle club soda --yes -- club soda 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Dash of tobasco 1 tablespoon butter A 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard 1 egg yolk, beaten lightly Cut French bread in hunks so that each will have some crust. Combine shredded cheese with flour. Combine soda butter and seasonings in saucepan and simmer. Add cheese and flour mixture slowly while stir ring constantly Cook until cheese melts and continue stn ring until mixture thickens Remove from heat and add a lit tie cheese mixture to beaien egg yolk. Simmer for just a few seconds -- not boil and stir con stantly. Serve with the bread chunks by dipping them into your super cheese Fondue Postal Problems An old woman handed a stamped parcel to a post office clerk and asked him to weigh it.
