MARCH 23,1979 Remodeling help for hbmeowners available in a free new booklet Just as sure as spring brings rain and robins, it also heralds the annual house- cleaning ritual. Long months of indoor ac tivity can take their toll on household well-being, leav ing a scattering of stains, spots and marks. Fortu nately, warm weather is a perfect tonic for ailing habitats, urging conscien tious homemakers to make a "clean sweep." Although stains and other accidents are best treated when fresh, there is no rea son to let neglected spills make a lasting impression. The resourceful home- maker can easily restore good health to her house just by calling on those common household products that have resided on kitchen cabinet shelves for genera tions. Bon Ami, Americas good friend that has been around the house since 1886, suggests these tips for spruc ing up this spring. In the living room: • Remove stains on wallpaper by applying a mix ture of cornstarch and clean ing fluid; allow to dry and brush off. Rub with a cloth dipped in borax. Apply a piece of blotting paper, press with a warm iron and the spot should disappear. •Treat minor burns on fur niture with wax or oil-based polish. • Restore yellow ivory piano keys by rubbing a mix ture of lemon juice and salt (use on white keys only • Wine spills on up holstered furniture Can be treated with a mixture of one tablespoon of ammonia and VA cup of water. Wprk in and rinse with clear water, then blot. (Test on hidden portion of fabric for color fastness). In the kitchen: • Remove stains from alu- Look for home professionals ® Doing it yourself may seem a great way to cut remodeling costs. But, unless you know what you're doing, you're likely to pay later for your mistakes, warns the National Home Improvement Coun cil. A professional home im provement contractor can prevent costly mistakes and help you make"your home exactly the way you want it. How do you choose a reli able contractor? NHIC of fers some help. • Ask friends, neighbors or a nearby NHIC chapter to recommend a contractor. Your local Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce can inform you if any complaints have been filed. • Obtain estimates from several contractors. Be sus picious of figures much higher or lower than others. • Employ a contractor with an established place of busi ness, preferably in your area. He'll want to protect his reputation with good work. • Get a written statement that all local building re quirements will be met. • Make sure your contrac- tor's insurance covers Workmen's Compensation, property damage and per sonal liability. • Okay all plans before work begins--get down in writing exactly what you want, and exactly what the contractor promises; to do. • Don't try to cut corners. A professional knows the costs of materials, labor rates, and knows better than to scrimp 6n qu&ity V, minum cookware by cooking acidic foods such as rhubarb or tomatoes, or boil 1 to 2 tablespoons of cream of tar tar in a quart of water. • Renew the finish on non-stick cookware by boil-- ing a solution of 2 ta blespoons of b&king soda, Yz cup of liquid bleach and 1 cup of water. Wash, rinse and recondition by lightly rub bing with vegetable oil. In the hath or kitchen: • Remember, when you scour you may scar. Deter gents containing harsh abra sives may remove dirt and grime, but often take the porcelain's luster along with them. Tests prove that regu lar use of Bon Ami Polishing Cleaner, formulated with the mild abrasive feldspar, can actually restore porcelain shine after 30-60 days. In the family room: • Erase the trace of rubber heel marks on tile floors with a dash of washing soda and a gentle rubbing with a plastic scouring pad. • Banish crayon marks by gently rubbing with a damp cloth and baking soda. A mastery of these stain- removal tips will help any homemaker make a fresh start this spring.
