McHENRY, ILLINOIS 815-385-4200 Life expectancy is influ enced by many factors, like fire safety, wind resistance and. of importance ,to homeowners in warm, humid climates, fungus and algae resistance. Don'i let your roof go up in smoke! Fire safety is tested by Underwriters Labora tories'. Inc., an independent, non-profit public testing laboratory. Roofing that is classified as Class "C" has been tested for light fire exposure, indi cating that it will not be easily ignited, and will not readily support the spread of fire over the roof area. Natural fire protection Some roofing materials, such as slate and ceramic tiles, offer natural fire protec tion. Felt-based asphalt shin gles are manufactured to meet Class "C" standard or better. Wood shingles are readily combustible and will not meet the Class "C" standard unless they are chemically treated for fire retardancy. Most fiber glass-based as phalt shingles, however, have been awarded a Class "A," the highest rating con ferred for fire resistancy. Wind resistance is also tested by Underwriters Laboratories, and shingles must withstand test winds of 60 miles per hour continu ously for two hours to be classified as "wind resis tant." Check labor costs Self-sealing Asphalt shin gles that bear the "wind- resistant" label were origi nally developed for high- wind areas, but now are standard in most parts of the country. Now that you know what to look for, have selected your roofing materials, checked into labor costs and determined the life expec tancy of your new roof--it is easy, with a little simple arithmetic, to estimate the annual cost. Magic formula Here's the magic formula: Total cost of materials and labor, divided by design life, equals the annual cost of use. COME AGAIN? Just add the cost of labor and materi als, and then divide by the shingle's design life. You may be surprised to learn that the more expensive shingle is the more econom ical one in the long run, be cause the cost of materials and labor is spread out over a longer period of time. Re member the old adage, "You get what you pay for!" For more information, write the CertainTeed Home Institute at P.O. Box 860, Valley Forge, PA 19482. How to give old fireplace fresh new spring clean-up bll a A fireplace can be the focal point of any room and an element of beauty through out the year. This spring, be Sure to include it in your cleaning and redecorating schedule. Before you start to clean your fireplace or hearth, make sure the damper is open. Then, brush all hearth and interior surfaces with a strong, natural bristle brush and dispose of ashes; do not use a nylon or steel brush which could harm fireplace surfaces. Don't clean the fireplace with your vacuum cleaner as the air from the unit might blow dust around the entire room. The sticky soot of the fireplace can also dirty your vacuum attachments. Cleaning a well-used fire place is a super-size; job; after removing loose soot and ashes, to remove ground-in dirt and grime use Fantastik® spray cleaner. Just spray and allow to soak for two min utes; then scrub and rinse with fresh water. Acces sories can also be spray cleaned using a soft sponge or clean cloth--wipe dry and polish. A job well done deserves to be enjoyed, so become creative! Fill the clean hearth with lots of plants and big, fat, chunky candles, or try a fish tank, a bird cage or your favorite piece of sculpture, lighted with a small spotlight. ffj m u ft $ m m M m M* *ll m a QUALITY FIREPLACES THE FIREPLACE EXPERTS faeatilatDr* AMtraCAS LEAONG FBf PLACE SVSTEMS Woodburning Fireplace *995 VAS COMPLETE INSTALLATION.
