While today's laundry equipment has come a long way in sophistication of per formance and design appear ance, the concept of the "front porch laundry" has been implemented into a patio laundry by General Electric. INceil for change William J. Ketcham, CKD, designer of this airy laundry center, and manager of kitchen/laundry designs for GE, bases his design con cept on a need for an image change for the laundry area. According to Ketcham, "The laundry facility is still a forgotten area in much of to day's housing. There is still a continuation of the tendency to locate the laundry in the basement, or some other in convenient location, with only two water pipes, a drain line, and a bare 60-watt bulb; and exposed insulation be tween 2x4 studs as the de cor." liTiiK of a chore He also points out that doing the laundry isn't any body's idea of fun, especially since the average American family requires eight wash loads per week--or almost 400 loads of laundry a year. "But one thing is for sure; if you have a nice place in which to do it, the laundry isn't as much of a chore." Yet, there is a strong con sumer preference for laundry facilities that are convenient, functional and more attrac tive to complete today's cus tom homes. It was this grow ing preference from which Ketcham derived the "patio laundry," a bright, cheery center with an open view. Bright «lecor The patio laundry is de signed off the kitchen area, at the entrance from a garden patio. It is complete with storage for laundry additives, hidden storage for dirty clothes, counter top to fold linens, a sink and stylish contemporary oak cabinetry above and below. In addition to the center's convenient facilities, it all works because of the decor. Since white is the standard color for most laundry ma chines, as this full-size GE pair, light, natural-look oak cabinets are used. Result: the machines blend into the overall decor and the room doesn't shout "laundp'" In stead, bright color is used along with plants and natural lighting. I'oeful room ' Of course, everybody doesn't have space for a dream laundry like this room, but if you have a utility room (especially good if it's off th" kitchen), this patio laund will give you some ideas u* r how to get the most from it, or how to brighten up an existing laundry area that might be on the dingy side. This well-designed laundry center was developed for display during the annual Na tional Association of Home Builders show in January, and was featured in the Feb ruary issue of McCall's mag azine. ••• - y OPEN WIDE AND SAY BILCO What's the difference between a dead end cellar and a basement for living?
